John frowned deeply as Harlene's words sank in. Although he was entirely reluctant to admit it, he knew she was making perfect sense. Perhaps Emmy really had recovered her memory and rushed back to her true friends and family. Naturally, that meant he had been cast aside and forgotten. It was only human nature for Emmy to leave without taking the time to say goodbye. A profound sense of loss washed over him, but aside from accepting this sudden and massive shift in their dynamic, he had no other choice.
"Alright then," John replied with a bitter smile. "My parents have been urging me to fly back for a while now, so I suppose I will head back to Country M. If you manage to get in touch with Emmy or Penny later, please tell them that I will be waiting at Harvard to finish our research project together."
Harlene gave a brisk nod and waved him off. "Go on, have a safe trip!"
Stretching her arms wide, Harlene stood up from her chair. "I need to get back to work as well. I have some new friends in the tech department to meet. This place is a true paradise for geniuses. Once you graduate, you absolutely have to come back and join us!"
John forced a polite smile and nodded before turning around to walk back to his hotel to pack his luggage.
Meanwhile, inside a private hospital on Lani Island, Krystina and Danny hurried down the quiet corridor carrying bags of nutritional supplements. They were on their way to visit Sylvia and Steve. Krystina and her team had originally booked their flights back to the Capital two days ago. However, when Emmy suddenly went missing, leaving all calls and messages unanswered, they had been entirely too worried to leave. They ended up delaying their departure for another two days. Now, with a mountain of urgent affairs piling up at Starlight Corporation, they could not afford to drag their feet any longer. Knowing they had to leave, Krystina dragged Danny along for one final hospital visit before heading to the airport.
Standing outside the intensive care unit, they peered through the thick glass window. Steve lay weakly on the hospital bed, hooked up to a myriad of medical tubes. During the hospital riot a few days prior, James had swiftly intervened and taken down the attackers, but Steve's violent struggles had torn his original surgical wounds wide open. He had just been wheeled out of a second round of suturing the day before and had yet to fully regain consciousness.
Sylvia stood right outside the glass, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she stared coldly at the man inside. Krystina walked over, handed the bags of supplements to a nearby bodyguard, and turned to Sylvia.
"Ms. Moore, our flight back to the Capital is today. Are you going to come with us?" Krystina asked.
