The helicopter touched down on the landing pad outside the castle, kicking up a massive gale. The cabin door slid open, and the biting mountain wind instantly rushed inside. Brett jumped out first and turned around, offering his hands to help carry the children.
"Let me take them, Emmy. Your body cannot handle this right now."
Emmy instinctively tightened her grip, biologically reluctant to let go of her flesh and blood. But she had been bedridden for far too long, and her arms were already aching to the point of numbness. Let alone holding two, she completely lacked the strength to carry even one at this point. Seeing her trembling fingertips, Brett immediately shot a glance at his squad members. Two muscular Special Forces operatives carefully stepped forward and gently lifted Dolly and Joey from her arms.
The sudden emptiness in her embrace made Emmy's heart lurch uncomfortably. A middle aged maid who had been waiting by the helipad rushed over, supporting Emmy's unsteady frame.
"Ma'am, you are finally awake! This is wonderful news! The wind is fierce out here, please come inside and rest."
Emmy was indeed running on fumes. She had solely relied on fierce maternal instinct to keep herself upright. Now that they had reached a safe haven, that energy rapidly dissipated, leaving her mind swimming in chaos. Her vision blurred at the edges, and a loud ringing filled her ears. She was half carried into the heavily fortified European castle by the maid. After drinking half a glass of warm milk, she fell back into a deep slumber the moment her head hit the pillow, completely unable to utter another word.
By the time she opened her eyes again, the sky outside the window had already turned dark. A single warm, dim wall sconce illuminated the bedroom. Turning her head slightly, she saw her two children sleeping peacefully right beside her. The maid, who had been keeping watch by the bed, leaned in and lowered her voice.
"Ma'am, would you like to get up and eat something? Mr. Nelson just called to say he might be delayed for another two days. He specifically instructed that you stay here in the castle and focus on your recovery. You are not to go anywhere."
Emmy murmured softly in acknowledgment but could not bear to leave the warmth of the bed. Thanks to her extended deep sleep, the thick fog in her mind had cleared significantly, leaving her thoughts sharp. Lying on her side, she stared greedily at her sleeping children, unable to tear her eyes away.
