Emmy instantly grasped the severe gravity of the situation. If this was an organization the United Nations needed to step in and handle, how could James simply hand over the coordinates to Calony? That intel was James's absolute trump card. He could have easily used it as a bargaining chip to secure international protection. The only reason he surrendered that ace and shouldered the crushing pressure alone was to guarantee her safe return home.
Emmy felt as though she had been brutally punched in the chest, leaving a dull, radiating ache. She clenched her hands into tight fists, pressing them hard against her heart, her nails digging deeply into her palms. No wonder Brett said James was facing retaliation from the Zenith Initiative. No wonder Moonlight Bay had been bombed. A James without his trump card was a tiger stripped of its fangs. Naturally, the vicious wolves hiding in the shadows would leap out to tear him apart.
Taking a deep breath, Emmy forcefully suppressed the sour lump rising in her throat. "Understood. I will get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. I absolutely will not let this dirty water stay poured over my head."
After hanging up, Emmy stared blankly into the empty space before her. The spot over her heart still throbbed fiercely, the suffocating pain making every breath a struggle. She could not even fathom the mountain of pressure James must have carried while walking out of Fiji with her unconscious body in his arms. But she knew it must have been pure hell.
Just then, she felt a warm touch against her leg. Joey had wandered over on his short little legs without her noticing. Gripping her pant leg with both small hands, he tilted his cool little face upward and looked at her with wide, anxious eyes.
"Mommy, what is wrong?" The highly perceptive little boy had sensed his mother's emotional distress, his big eyes brimming with worry.
Dolly ran over right behind him. Still sporting a grain of rice stuck to the corner of her mouth, she threw her arms around Emmy's calf and cooed sweetly, "Mommy, my tummy is full! Come play with me!"
The innocent voices of her children were the ultimate healing medicine. Looking down at the two beautifully sculpted little dumplings, the dark clouds in Emmy's heart immediately began to scatter. She forcefully pushed the suffocating burdens down into the depths of her mind, refusing to infect her children with her negative emotions. Reaching out, she gently stroked their heads, managing to summon a tender smile.
"Alright, Mommy will play with you. What do you want to play?"
She put her phone away, gathered her energy, and took Joey's hand to begin the search. The mother and son dramatically searched around the bedroom before finally approaching the curtain. Joey's eyes sparkled with excitement as he yanked the fabric aside. "Mommy! I found Dolly!"
Dolly squealed in delight, giggling hysterically as she threw herself into Emmy's arms. The three of them tumbled around the spacious bedroom, utterly absorbed in their game. Unwilling to ruin her children's joyful mood, Emmy temporarily banished all her thorny problems to the back of her mind. She chased the two little ones from the bedroom out into the hallway.
The castle was massive, and their game of hide and seek lasted for over an hour. It only stopped when Dolly suddenly dropped her bottom onto the floor in the corner, her face flushed red as she waved her little hands. "No more playing! No more playing!"
Emmy stepped forward to pick her up, but abruptly stopped in her tracks. Under the bright hallway lights, she noticed Dolly's face was flushed an unnatural shade of red. Her heart leaped into her throat as she hurried over and crouched down. "What is wrong, Dolly? Does something hurt?"
