Brett didn't hide anything, reporting truthfully to her. "Ma'am, this maid is named Jada. She is the widow of a veteran undercover narcotics officer."
"A widow?" Emmy paused slightly.
Brett nodded, his tone growing heavier. "Years ago, that officer went deep undercover in South America, achieving many great merits. But later on, his identity was compromised, drawing the most frenzied retaliation from the drug lords. That night, the entire family of five was killed, except for Jada, who happened to be out buying medicine. Captain James happened to be executing a mission in Jada's hometown at the time and conveniently saved her from the pursuers. He then sent her to The Sanctuary at Cloudrest Peak, keeping her identity hidden for her protection."
Brett paused, offering a detailed explanation to ensure Emmy would not overthink the situation. "When we heard you and the children were coming over and needed someone to take care of you, many women in The Sanctuary who had received the captain's grace submitted applications. Captain James personally reviewed the list and ultimately chose Jada. Her background is absolutely clean, and she is undoubtedly reliable."
Emmy felt as if a heavy stone pressed against her chest. She never expected the always smiling, efficient Jada to carry such a bloody grudge. No wonder Jada's eyes had looked so sad when she hummed that lullaby earlier.
After a moment of silence, Emmy couldn't help but ask about her children.
Brett lowered his eyes, his expression dimming. "She originally had two sons and a daughter. The youngest two were a pair of twins who had just turned two when the incident occurred. They were all murdered by those animals."
Emmy gasped, her hand gripping the edge of the desk. Twins, only two years old. No wonder Jada had looked at Joey and Dolly in the bedroom earlier with such loving, heartbreaking eyes. Jada was looking through these two children to see her own babies who would never grow up.
Emmy felt a sharp sting in her nose. Perhaps only a mother could truly empathize with such piercing pain. If anyone ever dared to touch her Joey and Dolly, she would definitely go mad.
A brief, dead silence fell over the study.
