Brett abruptly stood up, an expression of sheer ecstasy blooming on his face. His first instinct was to share the good news with Emmy. But when he looked down, he saw that she had fallen into a deep slumber. Huddled in the freezing wind, her brow was slightly furrowed, as if she could not find peace even in her dreams. Brett suddenly couldn't bear to wake her.
That was until a massive surge of air swept over them. The brilliant searchlight of a military helicopter instantly pierced the darkness, casting its beam over the helipad in front of the castle. Gale force winds mixed with snow pellets furiously battered their faces.
The deafening roar of the engine echoed through the air.
Blasted by the cold wind, Emmy instinctively shrank her neck. Then, she jolted awake, raising her head in bewilderment as her hand reflexively shot up to block the blinding light. Directly ahead of her, a pitch black military helicopter was slowly descending. The fierce winds churned by the rotors sent the snow on the ground flying wildly into the air.
Before the helicopter had even fully stabilized, the cabin door was hauled open. A tall, upright figure appeared in the doorway. The man wore a black combat uniform, his tactical vest outlining his lean, powerful waist. His long legs were clad in cargo pants and military boots, exuding an overwhelming aura of masculinity and dominance.
Without hesitation, he leaped down from the cabin door several meters high.
Emmy slowly widened her eyes, thinking she was still trapped in one of her bizarre dreams. Immediately after, the helicopter touched down completely, and another elegant figure jumped out. It was Andrew, closely followed by her mother stepping out of the cabin.
The moment James hit the ground, he didn't even bother to remove his helmet. He strode swiftly in their direction, pushing through the howling wind and snow, his gaze locked intensely onto the woman on the steps.
Seeing that Emmy was awake, Brett shouted at the top of his lungs. "Ma'am! Captain James is back!"
That single shout finally yanked Emmy's soul back to reality. This was not a dream. He really had returned. Before midnight struck, he had brought her mother back safely.
All the terror and yearning she had harbored completely erupted in this instant. Emmy abruptly stood up, wanting to rush toward the man she had been longing for day and night. But she had sat in the frigid wind for far too long, and her legs were frozen numb. Taking merely a single step, her knees buckled, and she pitched forward uncontrollably.
