The mercenaries scrambled frantically for cover, terrified out of their minds. Amidst this utterly chaotic hail of bullets, James's muscles instantly locked tight. With a sudden, low-profile roll, he vanished behind a stack of solid wood crates. While the mercenaries were running around like headless chickens, desperately trying to survive the unseen shooters on the hill, no one had the luxury to care about the four chained captives left out on the sand.
With his back pressed against the crates, James used the blind spots to stay flat against the sand. After a few rapid tactical rolls, he soundlessly closed the distance to Will and the others.
"Captain," Will whispered, his eyes lighting up.
James slammed a hand onto his shoulder. He kept his voice low, his tone carrying an unquestionable authority. "Use the chaos to escape. Those words were all it took. Years of walking the razor's edge had honed a deep, unspoken bond between them, and the four men immediately understood their leader's intent. The captain had his own plans, and they were not to be compromised.
Without another word, the four men's eyes turned lethal. With a few sharp clicks, they utilized a tactical maneuver to instantly pick the iron cuffs off their wrists. Moving like four phantoms, they kept low and used the terrain for cover, rapidly slipping away toward the reefs.
Just then, a mercenary hiding behind some oil drums happened to turn his head and caught sight of them. "Shit! The prisoners are making a run for..."
