At that exact moment, on the pitch-black waters bordering the Delta.
Major General Calony's three massive yachts pressed toward the coastline, cloaked like silent ghosts in the night. Inside the opulent captain's quarters, a communications officer immediately decoded the intercepted telegraph and handed the slip of paper to Calony.
Reading the message, Calony raised a pleased eyebrow, his mood lifting significantly. The door to the cabin was pushed open, and Mercedes walked in, carrying a platter of sliced fruit. She wore a silky, burgundy slip dress that clung perfectly to her curves.
"Still busy?"
Calony glanced up, and upon seeing Mercedes's breathtaking face, his mood soared even higher. He yanked her into his arms, pulling her down onto his lap. Though he had slept with countless women over the years, they were all cheap, vulgar things compared to Mercedes, who had genuinely struck a chord deep in his heart. It was a stroke of absolute luck that her serious crimes had forced her into a corner, giving him the perfect opportunity to pluck this exquisite rose for himself. He was so enamored that he couldn't even bear to leave her behind during this impending massive turf war, bringing her straight to the front lines the moment she finished her business.
Wrapping his arm around her slender waist, Calony planted a heavy kiss on her cheek. "Just finished. You really have to hand it to him. James Nelson truly lives up to his title as The States' top elite soldier. The man is my lucky star. As long as tomorrow's plan goes off without a hitch, I'm going to pillage every single resource this Delta has to offer." He pinched her chin, his voice dripping with honeyed possession. "When the dust settles, how about I let you pick two mining zones as a wedding gift?"
Mercedes merely offered a faint smile, gently pushing away his wandering hands. "Gifts are boring. I only like things I can seize with my own two hands. That's where the real thrill is." As she set the fruit platter down, her gaze drifted involuntarily toward the dimmest corner of the captain's quarters. "Are you really not going to follow James's original plan? Are you seriously not bringing that thing with you?"
