James did not bat an eye. He admitted it immediately, the confession leaving his lips with absolute ease. He even pulled out a chair and sat down directly across from Hector. Crossing his long legs casually, his posture remained relaxed, utterly devoid of fear.
He stated that she was, after all, the owner of Star Jewel, making it easy for her to gather intel about the island. He explained that since the outside world was buzzing with rumors of his impending marriage to Hector's daughter, a woman with her temper would naturally come demanding an explanation.
Hector sneered, asking how exactly James planned to provide that explanation.
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of James's mouth. He pointed out that her financial power could never compare to Hector's. He confidently added that anyone with half a brain would know exactly whom to choose and which side to stand on in a place like this. Leaning forward slightly, he told Hector there was no need to worry because his wife was a smart woman. He reasoned that since she wanted to walk off this cruise ship alive, she naturally would not dare to cause a scene. Not only would she refrain from making trouble, but she would also prepare a generous wedding gift for him and Hector's daughter later.
Hector stared at him, the hand holding the cigar freezing in mid-air. He obviously did not buy James's entire story. However, as the absolute authority here, he would not openly move against Emmy either. After all, whether the creature was real or a machine, she was nominally considered Abis's prey. With representatives from various powerful factions present on the island today, and considering he had personally called for a ceasefire outside, he had no desire to stir up trouble at this critical juncture.
Hector slowly exhaled a thick cloud of smoke. He warned James to be smart and not force him to step in personally to solve unnecessary problems. James stood up and gave a slight nod. Without uttering another syllable, he turned and strode out with steady, measured steps.
Meanwhile, in a dimly lit room on the very top deck of the cruise ship, a massive screen on the wall flickered with cold, eerie light. The display was split into dozens of smaller feeds, providing comprehensive, blind-spot-free surveillance of every corner of the ship. Dean lounged deep in a sprawling leather sofa. Dressed in flawlessly tailored black haute couture, he rested his long legs casually on the edge of the coffee table. His fingers drummed rhythmically against the armrest.
Sitting across from him was Hector's wife. Following his gaze to the screen, she looked at the central feed displaying Emmy in her windbreaker. She scoffed, asking if a mere android was worth staring at for so long.
The drumming of Dean's fingers stopped. A low, unsettling chuckle escaped his lips as he tasted the word on his tongue, questioning the term "android."
