She ran recklessly forward, pushing past her physical limits, losing all track of the distance she had covered. It was not until the dirt beneath her boots gave way to soft sand that she finally heard the rhythmic crashing of waves against the rocks. Reaching the shoreline under the cover of night, she quickly located a cluster of jagged coastal rocks. Using her slender frame to her advantage, Emmy squeezed into a deeply concealed crevice. Freezing seawater washed over her calves, leaving her shivering violently, but she clamped both hands tightly over her mouth to muffle her ragged breaths.
Just then, the chaotic crunch of boots on sand and sweeping flashlight beams pierced the darkness nearby. "Search over there! She couldn't have gone far!" The heavy footsteps lingered near the rocks for a heart stopping moment before continuing down the beach, chasing after empty shadows. Huddled in the pitch black crevice, Emmy listened to the sounds fade away as silent tears streamed down her face.
Meanwhile, two kilometers away at an abandoned container terminal, the biting night wind carried the harsh, acrid scent of gunpowder. James stepped out of the heavy darkness looking like a cold faced god of death straight out of hell. His custom tailored shirt was stained with grime and blood, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows to reveal forearms corded with explosive muscle. Carrying an assault rifle that was still smoking, he radiated the iron willed, suffocating oppression of a top tier elite soldier, enveloping the entire dock.
Surrounding him, Will, Brett, and their special ops brothers, alongside Calony's finest troops, formed an impenetrable net of steel that completely locked down the area. Countless red laser sights crisscrossed through the night, dotting the small cluster of men cornered in the center. Dean had reached the absolute end of the line. The mercenaries and operatives on his outer perimeter had been virtually wiped out by James's relentless, suicidal onslaught. Now, Dean was left with only six of his most loyal, bloodied subordinates, who still had their weapons raised as they formed a tight defensive circle around him.
There was no escape. The entire terminal was sealed so tightly that not even a fly could slip through. Looking at the sea of dark muzzles aimed at him, Dean's usually gloomy and obsessive face suddenly settled into a bizarre calm. It was as if he had entirely given up resisting. He slowly lowered his gun, turning to pat the shoulder of one of the men shielding him. "That is enough. Put your guns down and run for your lives."
