Dean, who had been clutching his bleeding knee and gasping for air, snapped his head up at those words. He leaned against the metal wall of the container, utter disbelief flashing across his eyes. Soon, that shock twisted into bottomless jealousy and pure madness.
"I really didn't expect it. I can't believe Emmy actually told you about something like this," Dean muttered. He shook his head with a miserable, broken laugh, his voice dripping with bitter resentment. "She really trusts you, doesn't she? To think she would share our deepest secret with you without holding anything back." Dean suddenly shot a venomous, chilling glare up at James. "So what? Hearing she came back from the dead, don't you think she's a freak? A monster?"
Without waiting for James to answer, Dean broke into a neurotic, unhinged cackle. "Both of us were reborn! We are both monsters! Only a monster truly understands the loneliness of another monster, which makes us a match made in heaven!" Dean slammed his fist into the metal siding, screaming hysterically, completely ignoring the gunshot wound in his leg. "What gives you the right to come in late and take her from me?!"
Before the final word even left Dean's mouth, James closed the distance in a massive stride and delivered a devastating punch squarely to his face. The sheer force of the blow snapped Dean's head sideways, sending the back of his skull crashing heavily against the iron wall. James grabbed him by the lapels of his custom suit, violently hauling his entire body upward. James's dark eyes were entirely bloodshot, radiating a savage brutality that looked ready to tear the man in front of him to shreds.
"You are the only monster here!" James snarled, gritting out every word. "You murdered Emmy!"
That sentence struck Dean's soul like a sledgehammer. He suddenly froze. His manic, crazed eyes slowly lost their focus. It was true. Counting the years since he was reborn, it had really only been four years. Yet he felt as if he had almost forgotten what exactly had happened in his previous life. He and Emmy had not been reborn together because of some divine blessing. It was because he had personally caused her death.
