Emmy froze in place, so tense she almost stopped breathing. She stared at his bleeding arm, praying in her heart that he would not get hurt anymore. Perhaps God truly heard her prayers, or perhaps James's suppressive fire was simply too terrifying, but the bullets flying their way grew fewer and fewer until, several minutes later, the gunfire outside completely ceased.
James swept a cold, piercing gaze over the battlefield. Once he confirmed it was safe, he quickly pulled his body back. He casually tossed the empty rifle aside, pulled a roll of hemostatic gauze from the side pocket of his tactical pants, and used one hand to wrap the gauze haphazardly around his bleeding arm a couple of times. Then he lowered his head, clamped one end of the gauze in his teeth, and tugged hard with his other hand to tie a dead knot. Watching this series of wild actions made Emmy's tears fall even harder.
The moment he finished tending to his wound, James immediately turned around and dropped to one knee in front of Emmy. His warm, calloused hands cupped her dirty face, his dark eyes filled with undisguisable anxiety and heartache. "Are you hurt anywhere?"
Her eyes red, Emmy shook her head frantically. That right wrist of hers that had originally been in a cast had lost the plaster somewhere along the way. Now only a few strips of cloth hung from it. She paid no mind to herself, only staring anxiously at his freshly bandaged arm, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Your arm..."
"It is just a scratch, nothing serious," James said lightly, as if it really were a minor injury, his thumb gently wiping away the tear tracks and dirt from her face.
But how could Emmy believe that? She had seen with her own eyes the bullet bring out a massive spray of blood, soaking a patch of his tactical uniform. At this moment, from the terror of being abducted yesterday, the despair of fleeing for her life, and the worry of disturbing her pregnancy... all her emotions completely burst the moment she saw his gentle eyes. Emmy threw herself into his arms, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and burying her face in the crook of his neck as she cried silently.
"It is okay, it is okay..." James felt the trembling body in his arms, his heart clenching with pain. He carefully avoided her belly, his large hand stroking her messy hair over and over again. He lowered his head and kissed the top of her head, his voice raspy yet incredibly firm. "Do not be afraid, I am here. We are safe. I will take you home."
Emmy nodded forcefully in his embrace, her tears soaking his neck.
Coby, who had been crouching on the side completely dumbfounded, finally found his voice. He pointed at the two of them, asking with shock and a stutter, "Ms. Lincoln... you and Mr. Nelson, you two are..."
Emmy then pulled back from James's embrace. She wiped away her tears haphazardly and looked at Coby, her tone carrying a pride she did not even notice herself. "He is my husband!"
