The man watched her for a moment, then flipped his laptop open again. Out of Emmy’s line of sight, his fingers flew over the keys, tapping a quick shortcut. He turned the screen toward her.
“Just finishing up a report. It’s not great—I didn’t want you to laugh at me.”
The screen was filled with neat lines of text, formatted so perfectly it looked like something official.
Emmy felt a little sheepish for doubting him.
She let out a sigh. “You’ve been at that thing since this afternoon. It’s obvious writing isn’t your thing. Need some help?”
“I’m good,” he replied, spinning the laptop back. “Almost done.”
He looked up at her, his eyes lingering on her face. “You feeling better now?”
Emmy’s cheeks went hot in an instant.
“I’ve been fine for a while!” Her voice was a little too loud. “It’s late—you should get some sleep, too!”
She turned, ready to escape to her room.
“Wait.”
His voice stopped her cold, sending a shiver down her spine.
She blurted out, “I know I’m staying in your room, but I’m not used to sharing a bed. You should take the sofa. Or I will. Either way is fine—”
His voice, low and amused, cut her off.
“There’s a document you need to sign.”
Emmy froze.
She turned to see him pick up a file from the table.
“What’s this?” she asked.
James shrugged, his tone casual. “Not really sure. Starlight Corporation sent it to the hospital. You’ll know once you look.”
“Starlight Corporation?”
Her heart skipped a beat. She took the file, glancing at the cover—and there it was: “Share Transfer Agreement,” bold as day.
She flipped through the pages, barely able to believe it.
He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. “Forget dinner. I want something a little more… real.”
Emmy barely had time to process that before his arm slipped around her waist and his cool, minty kiss landed on her lips.
She couldn’t resist him at all. By the time she caught her breath, she was already pinned beneath him on the soft bed.
His kisses slowed, turned gentle and lingering, his hands tracing fire beneath the edge of her shirt.
Just when she thought things were about to get out of hand, he paused, his breath warm and unsteady by her ear.
Emmy was so tense she could almost hear both their hearts pounding.
After a moment, he pushed himself up, traced her nose with his fingertip, and smiled.
“We’ll wait until you’re fully recovered. I’ll sleep on the sofa tonight. See you in the morning.”
Emmy lay there in a daze, watching him leave the room, only able to mumble,
“See you… in the morning.”
