Emmy froze, staring at him like he’d just lost his mind.

“Dean, snap out of it. You’re about to marry Evelina!”

Her words hit him hard, like someone dumped a bucket of ice water straight over his head.

He just stood there, stunned.

Emmy took the chance to yank her hand free. Without another glance, she spun around and walked away as fast as she could.

Dean stared down at his empty hand, his chest tightening with panic. It felt like something precious was slipping right through his fingers.

He turned sharply, eyes narrowing like knives toward the doorway.

Lorelei was leaning casually against the doorframe, totally unfazed, spinning her phone in her hand. The screen was still lit up.

Dean stormed over, voice cold as ice. “Were you recording?”

“I can do whatever I want,” Lorelei replied, raising an eyebrow and meeting his glare head-on.

“Who did you send it to?”

She just smiled, eyes narrowing. “Why’d you say you’re her husband? Did you two actually get married or something?”

The tension around Dean spiked. His whole vibe went dark. “I don’t care who you’re sending it to. But if even a single second of that video leaks, I’ll make sure you’re kicked out of this hospital for good.”

He spun around and left, anger practically rolling off him.

Lorelei watched him go, a slow, sly smile curling on her lips.

She tapped her phone, sent the video, and added a quick message:

Steve, did you ever check if Emmy’s been married before?

Across town, Steve opened the message, watched the video, and nearly dropped his phone.

He hurriedly double-checked Emmy’s background and finally let out a relieved sigh.

Steve: Checked. She’s never been married.

Lorelei: Then why did Dean call himself her husband? He doesn’t seem like the type to make things up.

Steve: Who cares, as long as James is happy.

He quickly added: And whatever you do, don’t let James see that video!

She instinctively blocked the doorway, nerves jangling. “I’m really tired today. I just want to go to bed early.”

Before she could finish, James had already slipped past her, carrying his bag inside.

“If you’re tired, go get some rest,” he said, his voice low and smooth, like a cello playing right next to her ear. “I’ll take care of my stuff. You won’t even notice I’m here.”

Emmy rushed after him, flustered. “No, that’s not what I meant—”
