James didn’t say anything, just stared quietly down the hallway.
“If you’re really serious about her, you should tell her sooner rather than later,” Steve said, sounding worried. “She doesn’t seem fragile to me—maybe she could handle it.”
Honestly, Steve was pretty anxious about the whole situation. James, who was usually as cold as an iceberg, had finally fallen for someone, but their relationship had started with a forced marriage. If James didn’t come clean soon, if Emmy got too used to him just being a regular firefighter, it would blow her mind to find out he was actually someone powerful—and dangerous. The fallout could be huge.
James stayed silent, turned around, and headed back toward the hospital room.
Night was falling fast.
In the little park behind the hospital, the streetlights cast two long running shadows along the path.
Emmy jogged next to James, catching her breath as she told him about her day. “You should’ve seen Pattie’s face—it swelled up instantly, like a cartoon pig! It was hilarious.”
Her eyes were shining, her smile brighter than the city lights.
She glanced at James, taking in the sharp lines of his face. In the soft glow of the lamps, he looked even more striking. Sweat ran down from his short hair, traced his jaw, and disappeared into his T-shirt collar.
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat. Without really thinking, she blurted out, “Are you sure you’re not related to Mr. Nelson?”
James looked over, his voice a little husky from the run. “Hmm?”
“I mean, you’re both named Nelson, you look so alike. Sometimes I wonder if you’re long-lost brothers. Or maybe… one of you was adopted?”
Her guesses were getting wilder by the minute.
James finally stopped, slowing to a walk. He turned, looking right at her—his dark eyes serious in a way that made her chest tighten.
James fought a smile. She’d once told Mr. Nelson himself that the other James was better looking, and now she was telling him the same thing. This woman could really talk her way out of anything.
Emmy kept going, “That guy might look all classy and elegant, but I saw him kick two women out of his office like it was nothing. He’s scary. Definitely dangerous.”
She turned to look at James, her eyes full of trust. “But you’re different. You’re a real gentleman. You make me feel safe.”
James just shook his head, grinning as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her along to start running again. “You’d better remember everything you said tonight.”
Don’t blame me for keeping secrets—I told you. You just didn’t believe me.
Emmy completely missed the hint, thinking he was just acting cocky because of her compliments. She rolled her eyes, laughing to herself.
This man really had no idea how to be humble.

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
