James was sprawled out on the narrow cot, looking relaxed and completely at ease, one arm loosely wrapped around a woman curled into his chest. She had her head buried against him, the blanket wrapped so tightly around her you couldn’t see a single inch of skin. The blanket only reached James’s waist, leaving his long legs stretched out in the open, bare to the cold hospital air. He was still wearing the top half of his hospital pajamas, but the matching pants were only half on—one leg hooked over the bed while the rest dangled limply down to the floor.

The whole scene was so intimate, it was almost scandalous.

For a second, nobody in the room moved or spoke. The shock was so thick you could feel it in the air.

A dozen doctors and nurses just stared, stunned, but James didn’t even blink. He moved slowly, almost bored, as he bent to pick up his pants. If he was embarrassed, it didn’t show—he just looked seriously ticked off at being interrupted. He shot a cold glare at the crowd.

“What, are you all here to watch me get dressed?” His voice was low and rough, almost daring them to answer.

Even though he was the only one half-naked, somehow he made everyone else feel like they were the ones out of line. Every doctor and nurse in the room suddenly looked away, mumbling apologies as they rushed out like they couldn’t get away fast enough.

Only Lorelei stayed, frozen in place, staring at the top of the woman’s dark hair peeking out from James’s arms. It took her a few seconds to collect herself before she finally turned and closed the door behind her.

Emmy finally poked her head out from under the blanket, her cheeks burning so red they practically glowed. She scrambled to fix her wrinkled clothes, but the more she rushed, the clumsier her hands became. She fumbled with the back of her bra, but the clasp just wouldn’t cooperate.

James leaned back against the headboard, propping his head on one hand, watching her struggle with a lazy sort of amusement mixed with irritation. The corner of his mouth twitched, like he couldn’t decide whether to laugh or sigh.

“Need a hand?” His voice was still husky, the edge of desire not quite faded.

Emmy hesitated, then turned her back to him. James’s eyes darkened, still tinged with frustration, but he found the clasp and snapped it closed without missing a beat.

Emmy hurried to smooth down her shirt and slid off the bed in a flash. “You should probably get dressed too. The doctors are already making rounds.”

Lorelei slammed a stack of patient charts down on the desk, her eyes hard and sharp. “Do you have any idea how serious James’s injuries are? And you pick now to mess around with him? What, do you want him to die in your arms?”

Emmy’s face went cold. That was a low blow.

She’d always respected Lorelei, both as a doctor and as one of James’s friends. But she wasn’t going to stand there and let herself get talked to like that.

“Dr. Hall, please watch what you say.”

“First of all, I wasn’t seducing him.”

“Second, he’s my husband. I want him healthy and alive more than anyone.”
