Meanwhile, Emmy’s phone stayed silent.
She was so used to having more than a thousand unread DMs on Twitter that she’d muted her notifications ages ago. Unless a trending topic caught her eye, she barely even opened the app anymore. Tonight, she didn’t have the energy to care.
The ride back to their apartment was heavy with tension.
At the hospital, Emmy had held it together for her mom. No matter how upset she was, she kept her face blank and barely said a word. Now, with just her and James in the car, she couldn’t keep it in any longer.
“Take me to Abriella’s,” she said, her voice cold.
James’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. The city lights flashing through the windows made his jaw look even sharper.
“We’re going home,” he said quietly. “I’ll explain everything.”
Emmy didn’t answer.
She was waiting for his explanation, too. What scared her wasn’t the problem itself, but being kept in the dark.
Between husband and wife, there should be honesty—not one person left alone, second-guessing everything.
When they pulled up to their building, James turned off the engine and quickly walked around to open her door.
But Emmy was already out, slamming the door behind her without a glance.
James frowned and hurried after her, reaching out to take her hand like it was second nature.
She pulled away.
They walked into the elevator in stiff silence.
Inside, a woman holding a fluffy little poodle took one look at them and couldn’t help herself. “Oh dear, are you two fighting? Whatever it is, just talk it out. He looks like he’s about to have a heart attack!”
Emmy kept her eyes down, lips pressed together.
James managed a small, apologetic smile. “It’s my fault. I upset her. I’ll explain, but thank you for caring.”
The elevator dinged, and as soon as the doors opened, Emmy walked out without looking back.
The woman called after her, loud enough for half the building to hear, “Sweetie, your husband seems like a good guy! Couples fight, but don’t stay mad, okay?”
Back in their apartment, Emmy dropped her purse on the couch and got straight to the point. “Dr. Hall didn’t just talk to you about my mom, did she?”
James stood in the entryway, taking off his coat. He didn’t avoid her gaze; instead, he came over and sat beside her.
Emmy pressed her lips together, not answering.
How was she supposed to give someone else all her trust, after being lied to for seven years by the man she’d shared a bed with? She just couldn’t.
James seemed to understand. “I’m not Dean. You can try trusting me.”
Emmy’s lashes fluttered, but her voice was calm. “Trust isn’t just words.”
She paused, then said, “But I’ll give you one more chance.”
James let out a quiet breath, relief washing over his face.
He reached for her, pulling her into his arms and holding her tight.
“I was really scared you’d never stop being mad at me,” he said, his chin resting on her hair. “Ask me anything from now on. If I can tell you, I will. I won’t keep secrets from you.”
Pressed against his solid, warm chest, listening to his heartbeat, Emmy finally felt some of her tension melt away.
She tilted her head up. “So, is keeping my mom in the hospital part of all this classified stuff too?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
