James stopped dead in his tracks.
The alley was empty and still, with nothing but the sound of the wind and their uneven breaths hanging in the air.
A few seconds ticked by before he slowly turned to look at Emmy, his eyes dark and impossible to read.
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, half smirk, half smile, and his voice came out low and rough, tinged with something almost like mockery.
“Don’t recognize your own husband?”
Emmy’s eyes went wide, the words slipping out before she could catch them. “Wait, it’s really you?!”
A flood of anger and hurt, all tangled up with the sting of being lied to, shot right through her.
But before she could let it all out, his next words landed like a bucket of ice water.
He let out a short laugh, the sarcasm in his eyes cutting even deeper.
“If I were your husband, you’d be long gone by now.”
Emmy froze.
She stopped mid-step, the anger that had been about to explode instantly replaced by total confusion.
She just stared at his back, her mind wiped blank.
James walked a few paces ahead, but when he didn’t hear her following, he stopped and turned. Seeing her rooted to the spot, he frowned, marched back, and grabbed her arm, practically dragging her forward.
“If you ever get the chance, I’ll introduce you to my wife,” he said, his tone dry. “Maybe then you’ll stop mixing us up.”
Emmy pressed her lips together, her throat tight, not trusting herself to say a word.
She yanked her arm away from his grip and jogged the rest of the way in silence.
Soon the bodyguard’s car came into view at the end of the alley. A few guards were sitting on the curb, laughing as they tore into breakfast wraps.
James barely glanced at them before turning and walking away without looking back.
He hadn’t expected that if she ever found out the truth, her first reaction wouldn’t be shock or fear—it would be real, raw anger.
Emmy was always gentle, her moods steady and calm.
Other than the occasional spat, she’d never truly lost her temper with him. Even that time she caught him looking at her phone, she’d snapped at him, but let it go almost right away.
Most of the time, it was him sulking over something stupid while she patiently talked him down.
He’d never met anyone like Emmy.
She was warm, resilient, forgiving—a light that reached every dark corner of his life.
He couldn’t even imagine what he must have done to make her feel truly angry with him.
He closed his eyes and swallowed hard.
Maybe it was finally time to figure out how he was going to come clean.

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
