Emmy looked away and gave her fellow researchers a polite nod. “Jules, Nico, Krystina.”
Jules smiled at her, warm and easy.
Nico was about to say something, but Krystina jumped in with a laugh that dripped with sarcasm.
She shot Emmy a sideways glare. “Don’t be fooled by her looks or that family money. Hope none of you are falling for her act.”
It was as direct as an insult could get.
Nico slammed his teacup down on the stone table, tea splashing everywhere.
He was fuming.
“Krystina! She’s our new teammate! Can’t you show her a little respect?”
He stared her down, not pulling any punches. “Maybe you’re just bitter because your husband ran off with some pretty girl. Doesn’t mean every attractive woman is out to steal someone’s man.”
Krystina’s face went pale. She jumped to her feet, her voice sharp and shrill. “Don’t twist my words!”
“We all worked our butts off to get here. Even me and the fifth, we spent five years with the professor before he accepted us for grad school.”
She jabbed her finger so close to Emmy’s face it was almost touching.
“And her? Never even heard of her school! If she wasn’t Ms. Lincoln, you really think the professor would’ve let her in?”
Nico’s face was flushed with anger.
Krystina didn’t care. She swept her eyes over Jules and Nico, full of contempt.
“Oh please. She’s just young and pretty, comes from money, and look at you two—completely lost your minds over her.”
Right then, her little boy came running over, giggling as he grabbed onto her leg and called for his mom.
Krystina took his hand, shot Emmy a look full of disgust, and stalked away.
“Ollie, let’s go play somewhere else. It’s bad luck to stay here.”
Nico watched her leave, still fuming.
He turned to Emmy, his voice gentle and apologetic.
“Don’t take it to heart, Emmy. She just has a nasty mouth.”
She didn’t know all the details, just that a year later there was a news story that rocked the whole tech world.
Krystina had been murdered—her husband of ten years dismembered her and hid her in their freezer.
It took six months before anyone found her.
Even now, Emmy shivered at the memory of that headline. It was haunting.
By her count, there were only six months left until it all happened.
A heavy feeling settled in her chest. She lowered her voice. “Nico, you should talk to her. Tell her to get a divorce. No one should stick around for a guy who cheats.”
“I’m not getting involved,” Nico scoffed, rolling his eyes.
“With the way she acts, maybe she deserves that jerk.”
At that moment, a housekeeper hurried over and bowed politely.
“The professor would like to see you all in his study.”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
