Emmy shot Isabel a quick smile. “My husband’s calling me, Isabel. I’m gonna head out.”
Isabel glanced into the hallway, catching the bright porch light but no one in sight. She called after her, “Emmy, since we live so close, bring your husband over next time, okay? Seriously, make yourself at home.”
Emmy nodded and hurried inside. Abriella zoomed after her on her hoverboard, moving like a streak.
James was waiting by the elevator, his hand holding the door open for them.
The second the doors closed, Emmy couldn’t help but laugh, grinning at Abriella.
Abriella looked at her, confused. “What’s so funny?”
“You were a total badass today!” Emmy said, all admiration. “You’ve got to teach me how to slap someone like that. Whenever I try, it’s like I’m giving a gentle pat—no power at all.”
Abriella smirked, clearly proud. “I grew up doing heavy work. Most people wouldn’t survive one of my slaps. Next time you need someone put in their place, just let me know—I’ll handle it.”
Emmy shook her head, laughing. “That’s tempting, but it’s more satisfying to do it myself. Maybe you can just show me your technique.”
James chimed in. “I’ll teach you when we get home.”
Abriella nudged Emmy’s shoulder, raising her brows and giving her a teasing look. “Did you hear that? Let your husband show you. He’s way stronger than I am.”
One slap from him and someone would probably fly across the room.
The elevator dinged and the doors slid open. Abriella rolled out, waving over her shoulder. “See you tomorrow!”
The elevator kept going up to their floor.
As Emmy slipped off her shoes, she said casually, “We’ve been here a few days. Tomorrow’s the weekend—why don’t you invite your team over for dinner? We could have a little get-together.”
James paused at her words. “You’re not too busy?”
“No matter how busy I get, there’s always time for dinner. Plus, I wanted to ask if I could use the fire station’s space and equipment for something.”
James raised an eyebrow. “Just ask me. I’ll take care of it.”
A wave of heat hit her.
“Want to take a bath together?” His voice was low and tempting.
Emmy didn’t even have to think. “Nope, I’m way too tired. You go ahead.”
She didn’t have the energy to mess around with him tonight.
This man was a machine. After a whole day of intense work and training at the fire station, he’d still hit the gym at home, and somehow still have energy left over.
Monster.
James showered quickly and slipped into bed, pulling Emmy—already half asleep—into his arms.
He hesitated for a second, then finally asked quietly, “Babe, has it been a while since your last period?”
