Emmy’s heart skipped a beat, like something had slammed into her chest and left her buzzing all over.
James suddenly seemed to remember something. He leaned out of the car, grabbed a folder from the back seat, and handed it to her.
“Oh, almost forgot. This is for you.”
“This car, and the apartment—they’re both in your name now.”
“All the paperwork’s inside: the deed, the car title. Keep them safe.”
Emmy held the folder tight. Warmth flooded through her, soft and overwhelming. Her eyes burned and went blurry with tears.
She’d gotten plenty of gifts growing up—some fancier, some worth way more than this.
But nothing had ever made her feel this way, like her whole heart was wrapped up and protected.
This wasn’t just a gift. It was a promise. A real home.
James had handed her everything he owned, no holding back. He really wanted a future with her. To give her a dowry no one else could match, he’d probably sold off everything valuable.
He was so earnest it was almost silly.
And her? She was still keeping secrets, still hesitating behind all her worries.
Her nose prickled. “You just gave me everything you have? You really trust me that much?”
James saw her eyes rimmed red and reached over, folding her fingers gently into his warm palm.
He lounged back, looking relaxed and a little bit cocky, teasing her in that roguish way of his.
“What else can I do? I’m basically broke now, aside from my monthly paycheck.”
He squeezed her fingertips, his gaze locked on hers.
“If you ditch me halfway, then these years I’ve worked so hard… all for nothing.”
“And then, I guess I’ll just have to stick to you for life.”
Emmy burst out laughing at his shamelessness. That ache in her chest melted away, replaced by something sweet and soft.
She turned her hand and squeezed his, looking at him seriously. “Don’t worry. As long as you’re honest with me, as long as you don’t do anything to hurt me, I’ll stay. We’ll take care of our home together.”
Emmy could only roll her eyes and send him the five hundred.
As soon as his phone chimed, James accepted the transfer, looking as proud as a husband who’d just stashed away his secret pocket money.
Out of the corner of her eye, Emmy caught a glimpse of his phone screen. After her transfer, his balance was exactly 500.13.
She didn’t say a word. She just looked at the man beside her, her gaze lingering, a little deeper than before.
.
When they went upstairs, Emmy noticed her lipstick had smudged again. She hurried off to fix her makeup.
Inside the big apartment, everyone was chatting and laughing, the place buzzing with energy.
She’d barely finished greeting everyone when the doorbell rang.
Emmy happened to be closest, so she went to answer it.
She opened the door—and froze, completely stunned by who was standing outside.

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
