For Emmy, every minute felt like an eternity.
By the time it was over, her face was so red you could probably fry an egg on it.
She was about to slip away when, as if by magic, the bottle stopped spinning and landed squarely in front of her.
Steve grinned. “Alright, Emmy, truth or dare?”
She shot him a look, worried he’d make her kiss James again. No hesitation. “Truth.”
Steve rubbed his chin, pretending to think hard. “Do you still have feelings for your ex?”
Emmy paused for a split second.
Abriella threw a cushion at Steve. “What kind of question is that? Seriously.”
But Emmy just shrugged. “Nope.”
The game rolled on, and somehow, the bottle made a full circle and pointed at Emmy again.
She let out a sigh. “Truth, again.”
This time, Steve’s smile faded. There was something more careful in his eyes.
“Alright, Emmy. Have you fallen for James?” He hesitated, then added, “I mean, really fallen, like the kind of love where you’d give him your whole heart, no holding back.”
Suddenly, the living room went quiet. Everyone was staring at Emmy.
James was watching her too. His eyes were dark, unreadable.
Emmy hesitated. Just for a second. But that second felt endless.
Finally, she whispered, “Yeah.”
Steve pressed on, not letting her off easy. “Yeah? That’s it? I want a real answer, Emmy. The whole truth.”
James didn’t answer right away. Instead, he picked up his glass, about to take a drink.
Emmy’s heart squeezed tight. She quickly added, “I mean, other than the stuff you’re not allowed to tell me because of work. Anything else?”
James’s hand paused in midair.
He tipped back the glass, finished his drink, and set it down. When he looked at her, his voice was low and rough.
“I forfeit.”
The room went dead silent.
Emmy’s frown deepened, her heart sinking straight to the floor. So he had lied to her. But about what?
Steve jumped up, desperate to break the tension. “Alright, game over! Look at the time. I’ve got work tomorrow. Let’s call it a night!”
Everyone scrambled to get up and say their goodbyes, except for Abriella, who was already out cold on the couch, hugging a pillow in her sleep.
