The whole way there, Dean had to use every bit of wit and nerve he had just to keep up with that sly old fox. He knew if he slipped up for even a second, Pearl wouldn’t hesitate—she’d shoot him without a second thought. And then... that would be it. He’d never see Emmy again.
Emmy stared at him, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “How did you even know I was here?”
Dean’s throat tightened. He looked like he wanted to dodge the question, but with her cool and serious gaze locked on him, he knew he couldn’t avoid it.
He let out a sigh, voice low and rough. “A while ago, I helped out some mercenaries around here. Got the information from them.”
His answer was vague, but the word “mercenaries” hit Emmy like a thunderbolt, cutting right through her scattered thoughts. For a moment, she hesitated, and then she suddenly remembered something Abriella had once told her.
Her eyes went wide. “The mercenaries who attacked James at Pine Peak a few months ago—the ones who got away. You were the one who helped them escape, weren’t you?”
Abriella had told her that, even though the military had raided their base in the capital, the main members had vanished overnight—spirited away by some mysterious person, never to be seen again.
So that mysterious person... was Dean.
He hadn’t just helped those criminals ambush James. He’d personally smuggled those murderers out of the country after their cover was blown.
Emmy started shaking, her voice trembling with barely contained anger. “Do you even realize what you did? Those men are drug traffickers, Dean! They’re poison! Do you know how many soldiers died trying to stop them?”
Dean stared back at her, a storm of anger and fear in his eyes, making him look even more intense and dangerous. “If it wasn’t for them, you’d already be dead—if you were lucky! You have no idea what you’ve walked into, Emmy.”
“You’ve been so protected, you don’t know how dark this world can get. If I hadn’t kept Pearl busy, those monsters would’ve torn you apart.”
“Do you get where you are right now? Here, women are just things—possessions. Once a woman ends up in this camp, none of them ever leave alive. Not even the military can do anything about this place.”
Her skin was so pale it almost glowed in the dim bamboo hut, her features delicate and striking. The red mark painted between her brows, the exotic dress and headpiece—she looked so pure it was dangerous. She was beautiful in a way that was almost unreal.
More beautiful than any woman in the whole camp.
Dean couldn’t even let himself think about what would’ve happened if he’d gotten there any later.
His hand shook as he reached out and gently rested it on top of Emmy’s head.
When he finally spoke, all the anger was gone. Only exhaustion and a desperate hope were left.
“Emmy, if we make it out of here alive—if we get back home—let’s get married again. Okay?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
I enjoy reading this. I like that the storyline isn’t drawn out and moves on. I also appreciate chapters being added almost everyday, thank you....
