The doctor smiled gently, moving the ultrasound wand over Emmy’s belly with extra care.
“Of course, let me check for you,” she said softly.
Officially, hospitals weren’t supposed to reveal a baby’s gender unless there was a medical reason. But this was the Capital’s top private hospital, a place where only the powerful and privileged came. For families who cared about legacy more than anything, knowing the baby’s gender early was almost a given—an open secret everyone pretended not to notice.
The doctor was already used to these requests and was just about to offer her congratulations when James suddenly spoke up.
“That’s alright. We’ll love them no matter what—boy or girl.”
Emmy paused, surprised, lifting her eyes to him.
She didn’t see the point in refusing. Knowing the gender wouldn’t change anything—they’d love their babies either way.
“It’s okay, let her check,” Emmy said quietly. “I’d like to start getting things ready for them.”
But James seemed uneasy. He squeezed her hand a little tighter.
“Let’s wait,” he said. “Let’s not find out yet.”
He hesitated, then added something that made no sense.
“If you want to buy clothes… just get girls’ clothes for now.”
Emmy stared at him, completely confused.
What was that supposed to mean? What if both were boys?
But she caught a flicker of something serious in his eyes—something heavy, maybe even worried. She remembered his complicated background and decided not to press.
She turned back to the doctor. “Let’s leave it for now, thanks.”
The doctor looked stunned, almost blurting out her question again.
“Ma’am, are you sure you don’t want to know?”
She was practically bursting with excitement. She’d already seen it—a boy and a girl, the rarest kind of twins. It was like winning the lottery. At this hospital, twins were rare enough, but boy-girl twins? That was pure good fortune. She’d really wanted to congratulate the couple.
But Emmy looked over at James, saw the determination in his face, and nodded.
“Yes. We’re sure.”
After the appointments and paperwork were done, Emmy could barely wait to get home before she called her mom.
The second Teresa picked up, Emmy’s excitement spilled out.
“Mom, you’re not just going to be a grandma—you’re getting double the grandbabies!”
There was a long silence before Teresa responded, sounding like she couldn’t believe it.
“If anyone says anything rude or superstitious, just ignore them. Our family doesn’t care about that kind of thing.”
Finally, Emmy heard the worry in her mother’s voice.
She suddenly remembered those two wealthy women at her checkup who had moved away with strange looks the moment they heard she was having twins.
“Mom, what’s going on?” she asked. “Is it bad to have twins?”
There was a stretch of silence.
Then Teresa’s voice came back, warm and comforting.
“No, sweetheart, it’s nothing like that. I’m just worried about you.”
“You know, when I was pregnant with you, I could barely get around by the last trimester. You’re carrying two—think how tough that’ll be.”
“When you get further along, James isn’t going to be able to handle it all by himself. I’ll bring Marian and we’ll come stay with you, help you out.”
Emmy felt a rush of warmth and gratitude. She smiled, letting her worries go for now.
Over the next few days, Emmy’s life settled into a simple routine.
Other than making time for a big interview about Infinity, she barely left the house. She threw herself into studying, focusing all her energy on preparing for her exams.

OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
