The old lady’s mouth hung open, her cloudy eyes wide with disbelief. For a second, she just stared, stunned—then suddenly she was beaming, pure joy lighting up her whole face.
She grabbed Emmy’s hand, her voice trembling with excitement.
“Your husband… his name’s James? Really? James?”
Emmy looked at her, totally confused by Grandma’s reaction. It was so weird. She could only nod.
“Yeah, Grandma.”
James reached over, gently freeing Emmy’s hand from Grandma’s grip.
“Go wash your hands,” he said in his low voice. “And help Grandma with the dumplings.”
Emmy nodded and followed the nurse inside, leaving James alone with his grandmother in the sunroom.
The old lady smacked James’s arm, half angry, half laughing.
“You brat! Why didn’t you tell me sooner that your secret wife is Emmy?”
She’d spent so much time regretting not introducing such a great girl to her bunch of troublemaking grandsons—and now Emmy was already family. Her heart was practically singing.
Just that morning, James had called to remind her over and over: he was bringing his wife to visit, but Emmy was shy and didn’t know his real identity. She had to keep it a secret.
She’d promised, never expecting the mysterious granddaughter-in-law she’d been waiting for was the Emmy she’d liked for so long. It felt like winning the lottery.
But while Grandma glowed with excitement, James only seemed more stressed, his frown growing deeper.
He pulled off his mask and lowered his voice.
“Grandma, Emmy gets nervous easily. Please, don’t scare her. Especially about who I am.”
“I know, I know!” she waved him away, clearly not listening, her mind already on her new granddaughter-in-law.
She rubbed her hands together, practically bouncing in her seat.
“Oh, I need to see my Emmy! I can’t believe I have such a wonderful granddaughter-in-law!”
She repeated “granddaughter-in-law” so many times that James felt his temples throb.
“I explained everything to Grandma. She won’t get mixed up.”
Emmy glanced at Grandma’s still-excited expression and whispered,
“She seems… a little too happy today. Go wash your hands and help out.”
“Okay.”
James nodded and slipped into the kitchen.
Emmy had just picked up a dumpling wrapper, hadn’t even added any filling, when James came right back. He was so fast, she seriously doubted if he’d washed his hands at all.
Grandma just kept watching Emmy, grinning for ages, then suddenly blurted out,
“Sweetheart, are you and James planning on having kids?”
Emmy froze mid-movement, then looked up and met Grandma’s hopeful gaze. She smiled.
“Honestly, Grandma… I’m already pregnant. Just over three months.”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
