Watching the police car drive away from the Sullivan estate, Mr. Sullivan felt a headache coming on.
Mrs. Sullivan’s face was tight with worry. “Honey, do you think we’ve upset Emmy? What if she holds this against us?”
Mandy just snorted, barely hiding her annoyance. “Why should we be scared of her? If anything, she should be worried about crossing our family!”
“Enough!” Mr. Sullivan snapped.
“Who told you to call the police? None of you ever make things easy!” His glare fell on Mandy, sharp and cold. “If you had even half of Emmy’s drive, maybe we wouldn’t have to rely on Abriella marrying up just to get ahead!”
Mandy’s face went stiff, her jaw clenched so hard it almost hurt. Inside, she was laughing bitterly.
As if it wasn’t their own lack of ability that made their branch the least important in the Sullivan family. Now they had the nerve to blame her for everything, acting like selling off their daughters was some master plan.

At the city police station, Emmy finished her statement and sat quietly in her chair, waiting.
There was a bit of a stir outside—the person coming to bail her out had arrived.
The officers had hoped to handle things quietly, without needing to call in anyone from South Bay Fire Station. But the man who walked in was even more intimidating.
James came in wearing regular clothes, his long strides instantly drawing everyone’s attention.
From the moment he stepped inside, every eye in the room was on him, full of shock and respect.
He was the chief of South Bay Fire Station, a legend in his own right, someone who’d helped the police solve countless major cases.
A young officer was still lecturing Emmy about “following procedure,” not even bothering to look up. “Ms. Lincoln, I understand you were worried about your friend, but you can’t waste public resources like this. Next time, just call the emergency number—”
He finally looked up, caught sight of James, and froze mid-sentence.
He jumped to his feet, so startled he almost saluted. “M-Mr. Nelson?”
James didn’t even acknowledge him.
His eyes went straight to Emmy. He walked over, reached out, and gently pulled her up from her seat.
“You okay?”
Emmy let him help her and shook her head. “I’m fine.”
The moment they got in the car, Emmy pulled out her phone and called Will.
“How’s Abriella?”
Will’s voice on the other end was heavy. “She’s still in surgery. The doctors… it’s not looking good.”
Emmy’s heart dropped.
She ended the call and turned to James right away. “Take me to the hospital.”
James didn’t say a word, just started the car and merged smoothly into traffic.
He kept one hand on the wheel and reached over with the other to squeeze Emmy’s hand tightly.
She looked down at their hands, fingers laced together, but didn’t pull away.
After a moment, she asked, “Why weren’t you on call with Will and the others tonight?”
She clearly remembered—he and Will were always a team.

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
