Dean leaned in, his voice so cold it sent a chill straight through her. It was barely more than a whisper, but it sounded like the devil himself was breathing in Evelina’s ear.
“Evelina, sometimes I wish I could kill you with my own hands.”
He paused, the words hanging in the air. “But honestly, you’re not worth the mess.”
Without warning, he pressed the burning end of his cigarette right into her scalp.
There was a soft hiss, then the sharp, bitter smell of burnt hair spread through the room.
Evelina’s scream tore through the silence. She clutched her head, pain shooting through her like fire, her voice raw with terror. “Please, Dean, it hurts. Please stop. I’m begging you. Please.”
Dean just watched, like he was taking in some masterpiece. He didn’t move until the cigarette had burned out completely, then finally let her go.
He turned away, strolled over to the sofa, and sat down, lighting another cigarette like nothing had happened.
“I’ll give you a chance,” he said, taking a drag and glancing at her shaking figure on the floor.
“Run. Go out the back door.”
“Find somewhere to hide, somewhere far away. And pray I never catch you.”
He paused, eyes cold and hard. “Because if I do, I won’t let you off so easy.”
Evelina was shaking so badly she could barely get to her feet. She didn’t even think about whether it was a trick. She crawled up and bolted, not so much as glancing at the front door, just running for the back as fast as she could.
The whole house was dead silent. It felt like everyone had disappeared. There was no one to stop her.
She got out easily, slipping through the garden and into the park beyond, the heavy darkness closing in around her, swallowing her up.
Dean stayed where he was, cigarette smoldering between his fingers. The red spark flickered, throwing shadows across his face, his eyes full of something dark and dangerous.
The only sound in the house was the slow, steady ticking of the clock on the wall.
Claudia’s eyes widened as a terrifying thought hit her.
“You’ve been watching us. There are cameras in here, aren’t there?”
The only place she’d ever spoken of her plan was in this room, with Evelina. There was no other way he could have known everything.
Suddenly, it all made sense.
She’d tried to send Evelina to prison just to calm Ben down, and Ben had agreed. But Dean had barged in, pretending to be the protective brother, insisting Evelina stay home.
Turns out, he’d been working with Emmy the whole time.
The realization sent ice down Claudia’s spine, her fear quickly replaced by a flood of rage.
“Dean, are you really going to drag us both down with you?”

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
