“So, that’s what’s been weighing on you.” The old woman nodded, her smile softening as she took it all in.
“It really is a hard thing to go through. Anyone would feel crushed.”
She patted Emmy’s hand, then her voice changed, suddenly lighter.
“But, sweetheart, aren’t you a genius? A tech prodigy? I remember you just won some big award, didn’t you?”
“She’s cared for you for half your life. Now it’s your turn to take care of her. That seems fair, doesn’t it?”
“She’s lost her legs, so you’ll make her new ones. The best in the world.”
“With your talent, isn’t that practically a walk in the park?”
Emmy just stared. It felt like she’d been struck by lightning, the words rooting her in place.
Of course.
How had she gotten so tangled up in her own sadness?
She couldn’t undo what had already happened, but she could change what came next.
She could use her skills to help Ivy stand again.
It took her a while, but finally a real smile broke across her face, brighter and more alive than any she’d worn in days.
The light was back in her eyes, burning fierce and clear.
“Grandma, I’ll do it. I promise.”
She held the old woman’s hand tight, repeating her words with a new kind of determination.
“You’re right. Maybe everything really does happen for a reason.”
“I can change what happens next. I’ll make sure Ivy gets legs that are truly hers.”
“That’s my girl!” The old woman chuckled, delighted to see Emmy’s spirit back. She looked at her clever, tough granddaughter-in-law and felt her heart just fill with pride.
James leaned back in his office chair, phone in one hand, absently spinning a pen in the other.
His wife only called him “Hubby” when she was in a really good mood.
The rest of the time, it was her usual “James” or just a brisk “Hey.”
Her laughter bubbled through the line, bright and clear.
“Lucky guess! Grandma is just amazing. I love her to bits.”
“She’s like an angel sent just for me. Whenever I trap myself in a corner, she says one thing and suddenly everything’s okay.”
She looked out the window at the endless blue sky, her voice soft with awe and relief.
“With Ivy… I kept thinking it was my fault, that I couldn’t stop what happened. But Grandma said life likes to throw a punch first, then hand you something sweet.”
“I’ve made up my mind. I’m going to build Ivy the best legs in the world. I’ll take what life gave us and turn it into something beautiful.”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
