Bang!
The man dropped down suddenly, his big frame half-crouched as he shielded her in his arms.
A muffled groan rumbled from deep in his chest.
Even through her daze, Emmy could feel it—the crushing weight landing straight on his back.
But he only paused for a second before pushing himself up, carrying the load with nothing but sheer will, still rushing her forward.
Silent tears slipped from the corners of Emmy’s eyes, only to vanish in the stifling heat.
He barreled through the thick smoke, heading straight for the gap where the firefighters had blasted through with water hoses.
“James!”
“James is out! Over here! Medical team!”
“Bring the hose this way! Cover for James!”
Ice-cold water sprayed over Emmy, and for the first time, she felt like she’d escaped hell.
James didn’t slow down as he carried her through the chaos. Even through the helmet, his voice was clear and commanding.
“Squad One, Squad Two, keep moving inside! Search every room—don’t leave anyone behind!”
“Perimeter team, hold the exit and watch for flare-ups!”
“Let command know the building might collapse. Tell everyone to stay alert!”
Finally, he burst through the front doors, Emmy still in his arms.
Outside, the crowd exploded.
“They’re out! Ms. Lincoln made it!”
“Oh my God, thank goodness!”
James hurried over to the stretcher, kneeling down to lay Emmy gently on it.
He turned to the doctor, voice sharp and steady. “She’s inhaled a lot of smoke, might have lung damage. Start oxygen, now.”
Dean insisted, not backing down. “I’m her family! I’m going with her!”
The doctor hesitated, then seeing there was no time to argue, nodded. “Fine, get in the ambulance!”
Emmy could hardly believe what she was hearing.
Family? The nerve!
She forced her eyes open, ready to speak up.
The doctor gently held her back. “Don’t talk! You inhaled too much smoke—your vocal cords could be damaged!”
All Emmy could do was glare at Dean.
Dean just ignored it, his tone turning gentle.
“Just rest, Emmy. Don’t get upset. I’ll make sure you have the best VIP room. I’ll take care of everything.”
Evelina clung to his arm, chiming in, “Yeah, Emmy, and I’ll be there too. We’ll both look after you. You’re not alone.”

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
