Emmy took the papers and walked over to the mahogany side table. She sat down, pen in hand, and signed her name. The three simple letters of “Emmy” looked sharp and elegant, but there was a kind of finality in the way her pen moved.
When she finished, she stood up. Cadence stepped forward right away to check the signature. Once she was sure everything was in order, she signed her own name in the client section without a second thought. Her handwriting was bold and confident, every stroke carrying a sense of power.
She stacked the two signed agreements neatly and handed them to Steve, who’d been waiting quietly nearby.
“Mr. Michell, please take a look.”
Steve accepted the documents. Besides being James’s good friend, he was also the chief legal advisor for Nelson Corporation. He opened his laptop and quickly got to work. The notary moved into position and within minutes, all the legal formalities were done.
“All finished.”
Steve closed his laptop, a warm smile on his face as he glanced at Emmy. “Congratulations.”
“Until the twins are born, you’ll manage their shares too. From today on, you’re officially the largest shareholder of Nelson Corporation.”
Emmy tried to smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. The weight of those shares felt like a mountain pressing down on her chest.
Nearby, Cadence had already slipped the documents into her briefcase and was getting ready to leave.
“Cadence.”
A low voice called out unexpectedly.
James had entered the kitchen at some point and now he walked out carrying a tray piled high with steaming dumplings. He stopped Cadence just as she was about to go.
“Stay and have some dumplings before you leave.”
Cadence stopped in her tracks, surprise flickering across her usually calm face. She’d worked for the matriarch for years and had crossed paths with James plenty of times. He was always reserved, almost cold, and hardly ever spoke to her directly. Today was different.
She hesitated for a moment, then put down her bag and sat back at the table.
“Okay.”
She picked up a fork, took a dumpling, and bit into it. The taste hit her all at once, stopping her mid-chew, her eyes widening with shock.
She hadn’t tasted this flavor in years.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Did the matriarch make these herself?”
Cadence looked up, her cool gaze meeting Emmy’s before glancing around at the empty garden. It seemed like she understood what was happening right away, and a faint frown appeared on her face.
She didn’t like it when people tried to get close to her for a reason.
“That’s thoughtful of you,” she said, polite but distant. “You can just leave it here.”
Emmy felt a wave of awkwardness. She knew she was being forward, but this was her chance. If she let it slip by, she might never get another. She forced herself to push through the discomfort.
“Cadence, I know this is a bit much coming from me.”
“But I really admire Grandma, and I heard you were her protégé. I just wanted to ask if, maybe in the future, you’d be willing to teach me a bit.”
Cadence’s eyes lingered on her for a second before she looked away.
“If the matriarch trusted you, I’ll do my part to protect you for her sake.”
“There’s no need to try and build a relationship with me. I’m not good at making friends.”
Her answer was firm and left no room for discussion.

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
