Outside the apartment, Danny arrived breathless, sweat dripping down his forehead and soaking his hair. He couldn’t shake the guilt about Ollie getting taken. The minute he finished work, he booked the fastest flight and rushed over. He’d tried calling Krystina and Ollie, but neither answered. At least he managed to get in touch with the bodyguard Ms. Lincoln had sent.

As soon as Danny reached the building, he spotted the bodyguard and hurried over. “Where’s Ollie?” he asked.

The bodyguard nodded at him, reassuring. “Don’t worry. James picked up Ollie about half an hour ago.”

Danny finally felt some relief. His heart, tight with worry, eased a little. “What about Ms. Carter?” he pressed.

The bodyguard pointed at the shut door across the hallway. “She’s inside with her husband. They’re talking about the divorce. It got pretty heated. She asked me to wait out here.”

Danny frowned. He remembered Ms. Lincoln’s warning. “Her husband’s dangerous. Is it safe for her to be in there alone?”

The bodyguard hesitated, then turned to knock on the door. “Ms. Carter?” he called.

No answer.

The bodyguard’s expression grew tense. He pressed his ear to the door, listening closely. Suddenly, his face changed. He heard something—a faint, strangled sound from inside.

“Something’s wrong. She’s in trouble.” The bodyguard stepped back and slammed his foot into the lock, hard.

It took a few heavy kicks, but the door finally burst open. Danny and the bodyguard rushed in.

What they saw made both their hearts stop. Henry had dragged Krystina halfway over the balcony railing. Twenty-one floors up. It looked like he was about to throw her off.

“Let her go!” the bodyguard shouted, charging forward.

Danny, terrified, ran after him. “Stop!”

Emmy called the bodyguard right away. “Don’t leave Ms. Carter’s side while she’s still in Riverdale. Not for a second.”

Then she called Danny. “Don’t come back yet. Stay there and help Ms. Carter with the divorce and splitting up the assets.”

The following day, Danny called her. “Ms. Lincoln, it’s all sorted.”

Emmy was surprised. “Already?”

“Mr. Nelson sent a whole team of lawyers. Henry didn’t stand a chance,” Danny said. “The divorce is final. Ms. Carter gets full custody of Ollie. She keeps the company and all her assets. Henry was found guilty of attempted murder. The evidence is solid. He’ll serve at least three years, maybe up to ten.”

Emmy snorted. “He got off easy.”

That afternoon, Danny came back. Emmy noticed he was alone and asked, “Where’s Ollie?”
