In the dining room, Abriella glared at Steve, her eyes sharp as knives.
“What did you say to Emmy?” she demanded. “You do realize she’s in her third trimester, right? She can’t handle any big shocks. If something happens, can you take that kind of responsibility?”
Steve leaned against the wall, hands in his pockets, and shrugged like he couldn’t care less. “She wanted to know. I wasn’t about to lie to her. Some things, she was going to find out eventually.”
Krystina walked over from the bedroom, her voice low. “Mr. Lincoln’s finally lying down. She looks really worn out.”
“Alright, let’s not wait for her then. We’ll eat once Teresa comes out.” As she said it, she glanced at Steve, about to invite him to stay for dinner out of courtesy.
“Mr. Carter!”
“Mr. Carter!”
Abriella and Sylvia both called out at the same time. They looked at each other, then said together, “You go.”
Abriella jumped in first, forcing a polite smile at Steve. “Mr. Michell is obviously a busy man. We wouldn’t want to take up any more of your precious time. So, we’ll let you go.”
Steve raised an eyebrow, giving Abriella a look that said he understood more than he let on, then glanced almost casually at Sylvia.
He didn’t say a word. He just nodded, turned around, and left.
The moment he was gone, Abriella let out a long breath, finally relaxing. When she glanced over, she saw Sylvia visibly relax too.
She frowned, a little curious. “Ms. Moore, do you know Steve?”
Sylvia shook her head without thinking. “Not really. We’ve bumped into each other at work a few times.” She paused, looking for a quick excuse. “He just… gives off a lot of pressure. His whole vibe is pretty intense.”
She could be honest with Emmy about her past — trust there was too important. But with Abriella, they were just friends. Some things didn’t need to be shared with everyone.
Abriella patted her shoulder like she’d seen it all before. “Don’t let him get to you. He looks scary, but he’s just a guy. He’s not going to bite.”
“They’re in the Capital now,” he said quietly. “What are you planning to do next?”
James didn’t turn around. His voice was rough, like he’d been holding everything in for too long. “Grandma’s not doing well. She doesn’t have much time left.”
He was silent for a long moment, then added, “But she remembers. She knows Jamie is gone.”
Steve stopped, stunned. For a second he thought he’d heard wrong.
Mrs. Nelson remembered Mr. Nelson was dead? Then all those times she pretended to mistake James for him at the nursing home, those moments she’d seem clear one minute and confused the next…
A wild thought suddenly came to Steve.
“She’s not actually confused, is she? Maybe… she just doesn’t want you to take revenge?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
