Something about it felt deeply familiar to her. So familiar, in fact, that she could almost feel the chill of the metal against her skin and picture exactly where each wire ran inside.
Around her, tourists crowded in, their voices overlapping in confusion.
“What happened? Is it broken?”
“It was working fine just a minute ago!”
The young man with the prosthetic leg was sweating, looking panicked as he slumped onto a stone seat by the beach.
“I honestly have no idea! I just wanted to walk on the sand, but it felt a little loose, so I went to adjust it.” He pointed to a small panel on his knee, his frustration obvious. “But I must’ve pressed the wrong button. Then I tried fixing it by pressing a bunch of others and, boom, it just shut off with a beep.”
“This thing’s way too advanced for me. The manual’s in my hotel room. What am I supposed to do now, limp all the way back?”
Everyone huddled closer, anxious and a bit helpless, some squatting down to peer at the device.
“Maybe the battery’s dead?”
“Try holding down the red button.”
“Don’t just press things. If it breaks, we can’t afford to replace it!”
Almost without thinking, Emmy found herself moving forward, drawn by something she couldn’t explain. She squeezed through the crowd and crouched in front of the man, her gaze locked onto his prosthetic.
“Mind if I give it a shot?”
Her voice was rough, but there was a quiet certainty in it.
The man looked up and hesitated. She was young, her dress kind of worn and dusty, but her eyes were bright and intense. For a second, he thought she looked familiar.
“You know how to work this thing?” he asked, then quickly explained again, “I just pressed these buttons and now it’s completely locked.”
She looked straight at him. “The adaptive data was wiped with that last error. If you’ve got a laptop, I can help you reset it.”
For a second, the man just blinked at her, then he broke into a grin and smacked his thigh.
“I do! Seriously, that would be amazing!” He looked relieved, almost giddy. “My friend helped me get this from the States. It’s the newest model, called Sync. Cost me a fortune, but it’s all anyone’s talking about right now.”
“I was going to get it tuned by a pro after my trip. Never thought I’d need help so soon.”
A backpacker nearby waved. “I’ve got a laptop!”
In moments, a slim laptop landed in Emmy’s lap. She settled cross-legged in the sand, opened the lid, and pulled a hidden data cable from the side of the prosthetic. She plugged it in.
The screen lit up, displaying a minimalist black interface. In the center were just two bold characters: Sync.

What I was dreading the most just happened, I think I need to move on from this story and read something else. This story is breaking my heart....

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
