Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 896

Emmy moved fast, slipping into the heavy, sea-scented clothes. The shells and conchs hanging from the outfit rattled with every motion, the sound blending into the background like a kind of natural cover. She took a steadying breath and grabbed the enormous straw hat, the one covered in shells, and tried to pull it down over her head.

It got stuck. Emmy’s heart dropped.

The hat was stiff and unyielding, and her thick hair, dark and wild like seaweed, was piled up underneath, refusing to fit. She struggled for half a second before realizing there was no way it would go on. Without the hat, the disguise was useless. But if she let her long hair down, it would be way too obvious. Dean’s men were just outside. There was no time left.

Emmy’s eyes sharpened. She pulled out her dagger in one swift motion.

The blade sliced through her hair with a harsh sound. She cut it off in handfuls, not caring how uneven it looked, just hacking away until locks of black hair littered the filthy floor. In less than thirty seconds, her long hair was gone, replaced by a jagged, uneven mess.

She didn’t even look at what she’d left behind. Emmy shoved the big hat onto her head, then pulled on the shell mask, hiding everything but her wary eyes. Curling up in the corner, she made herself as small as possible, her fingers automatically straightening the shell trinkets on her clothes.

A voice shouted from outside. “Check in here!”

The curtain at the cabin’s entrance was yanked open. Two men stepped inside.

Emmy kept her head down, staring hard at a pink conch in her hands. Over and over, she repeated silently: I’m just a mute boy selling shells. Nothing more.

The two bodyguards searched the cabin, their eyes sweeping the small space. They stopped on her, taking in the mismatched shells, the dirty clothes, the strong smell of the sea. She looked nothing like the delicate, well-kept woman they were after.

“There’s nobody here,” one of them said, scowling as he waved a hand in front of his face, trying to get rid of the fishy smell. “Let’s try outside.”
