Emmy finally let herself lean back against the cold metal wall, setting her coconut down by her feet. The shells sewn onto her clothes clicked together with a bright, brittle sound. She frowned.
Those men… They definitely weren’t Dean’s people. They weren’t sent by Dean’s so-called adoptive father, either. From their accents and the way they talked, they sounded like a bunch of Middle Eastern drug runners or terrorists.
But why were so many people after that soldier?
Emmy tried to piece together all the random bits of information she’d overheard lately. The soldier everyone whispered about was James. And James was actually Mr. Nelson, the one running the exhibition and all those AI experiments on this island.
Dean was always telling her that James was evil, someone who would come looking for revenge. He’d even threatened her, warning that if James ever found her, she’d be dead, too.
But now…
Emmy bit her lip, unsettled by a growing sense that something was really off. The more she thought about it, the more it didn’t make sense. Dean almost never told her the truth. He’d been tricking her from the very start.
She started to wonder if anything Dean said about James being a bad guy was even real. If James was truly such a monster, would the government have let him be a soldier? Would they have made him a hero, given him the highest honors?
She just couldn’t believe a whole country would get something like that so wrong.
Still, here was this group of terrorists, traveling halfway across the world just to come after James. They wanted revenge, plain and simple.
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat. A new thought hit her. What if… What if Dean was behind this, too?
Dean was crazy. He’d do anything to get what he wanted. If the story about James was all a lie, what was Dean really after? Was he trying to use these criminals to take down a decorated soldier? Was he planning to let them do his dirty work?
If that was true, then Dean was even more dangerous than she thought.
She could hate Dean for locking her up, for ruining her life. She could hate him for a thousand things. But when it came to what was right and wrong, she knew the difference.
She couldn’t just stand by and watch a soldier who’d served his country get caught in some psycho’s plot. She couldn’t let him die out here, in a foreign land, at the hands of these thugs.
Taking a long breath, Emmy steadied herself. Her eyes grew sharp and determined. She grabbed her coconut and pushed off from the wall, ready to move.
