After they finished the cake, Emmy grabbed the Star Jewel island map and hurried over to James, her eyes shining with excitement.

“It’s your birthday today, so I’m taking the day off with you. All those intense workouts? On pause,” she declared, pointing at a spot on the map. “How about we go diving? I heard from the staff that there’s a huge coral reef out here, supposed to be stunning. Maybe we’ll even find some gorgeous shells if we’re lucky. Come on, let’s make this part two of your birthday celebration.”

James looked at her, a soft smile lighting up his face. “Alright, I’m in. Whatever you say.”

Emmy’s face lit up as she bounced to her feet. “Wait right here. I need to change.”

Barely ten minutes later, she came back in a black one-piece swimsuit, a long coat thrown over her shoulders. She grabbed James by the hand and practically pulled him out the door.

The walk to the dock was perfect, with sunlight warming their backs and a gentle sea breeze in the air. Emmy held his hand without a thought, leading the way. James glanced at their joined hands, feeling a wave of warmth rush through him. He squeezed her hand a little tighter and found himself walking with a lighter step.

The yacht ride to their spot took about half an hour. The area was still private, not a single stranger in sight. The water was unbelievably clear, shimmering in a dreamy Tiffany blue. You could already see the bright patches of coral swaying gently under the surface. It was gorgeous, almost unreal.

Emmy was practically bursting with excitement. The yacht hadn’t even come to a full stop before she ran to the edge of the deck.

“Wow! It’s so beautiful!” she yelled back to James.

Then, without a second thought, she unbuttoned her coat and tossed it aside, revealing her swimsuit. Her skin glowed in the sun, almost too bright to look at. A split second later, she jumped right in, diving into the water like a fish.

James had just come out with their diving gear when he saw her go overboard. His heart jumped into his throat.

“Emmy!”

He dropped the equipment, didn’t bother with his own clothes, and dove in after her.

Underwater, he reached out for her, but then paused. Emmy moved like she was born for this, gliding through the water with the ease of a mermaid. She was so quick, even faster than in the pool, slipping right down to the coral reef and chasing after a school of tiny colorful fish.

She held up a finger in front of him, her voice soft and sweet. “Please?”

Her tone was so gentle, it was like a kitten pawing at his heart. Even if he’d wanted to resist, he couldn’t.

He looked at her for a couple of seconds, then let out a defeated sigh. “Alright, you win.”

But he still made her put on a diving mask and a simple oxygen mouthpiece.

“This is non-negotiable.”

James put on the same gear himself, then they both slipped back into the water, ready for whatever adventure waited below.
