Upstairs in her bedroom, Emmy clutched her phone and chatted with Teresa for over an hour. Even after they hung up, Emmy stayed perched on the edge of the bed, unable to calm the whirl of thoughts in her head. Her mom was already shining on the international stage. How could she, as her daughter, just sit back and let herself get left behind?

She was still lost in thought when her phone buzzed again. Danny’s name flashed on the screen.

Emmy took a breath, composed herself, and answered. “Mr. Lincoln! I have amazing news!” Danny’s voice was bubbling with excitement. “We just got the official notice from the international panel. Your SyncAI prosthetics system made it to the final shortlist for the Global Future Medical Technology Award!”

For a second, Emmy went completely still, then her heart started pounding. The Global Future Medical Technology Award. That was the top honor in AI medicine, basically the Oscars of the tech world. Teams everywhere dreamed about it, but hardly anyone ever got close.

Danny kept going. “The committee sent over the invitation too. The award ceremony is next week.” He hesitated, then asked carefully, “Mr. Lincoln, I’ve always accepted awards for you in the past. But this time is different. This is your work, your achievement, and the highest recognition out there. What do you want to do? Should I still go for you, or... do you want to go yourself?”

Emmy’s fingers tightened on her phone. She really did need this. A chance to step into the spotlight again and let everyone know that Emmy was back. And now that she’d decided to stand shoulder to shoulder with James, some things she had to handle herself. Hiding in the background was no longer an option.

“No need for you to accept it,” Emmy said, turning to look out at the endless sea. Her gaze grew determined. “This time, I’ll go get the award myself.”

“Got it! I’ll reply to the committee right away!” Danny could barely contain his excitement before hanging up.

Emmy set the phone down, opened her laptop, and dove straight into the pile of work emails her assistant had sent. She got so caught up that she worked right through to the evening, totally forgetting to mention the award ceremony to James.
