Someone was calling her name. Their voices blended together in a noisy blur—her mom’s choked sobs, James’s deep, worried tone. It was all just background noise to her. Her mind felt like mush. Emmy leaned back against the pillows, silent. The seriousness of it all hit her. She’d pushed herself too far, desperate for answers, completely ignoring her body’s warnings. She frowned, confusion flickering in her eyes.

“I think… I remembered a little bit,” she admitted quietly. “But it’s all scattered.”

The flashes in her mind were just fragments. An operating room. So many doctors. The sound of a baby crying. It all felt so real—so real she couldn’t tell if it was a lost memory or just wishful dreaming.
