Kai's POV
She just stared at me, her face a perfect, unreadable mask. I had just declared my intention to go to war for her, and she looked completely unmoved.
"My past is my own," she said, her voice cold and flat. "It is not your concern."
"I just made it my concern," I countered, my voice a low growl.
I turned from her and walked back to the small table on the balcony where our drinks were. The romantic dinner felt like it had happened a lifetime ago.
I picked up the crystal pitcher of water. My hand was perfectly steady.
I refilled her glass first, then my own. The only sound was the clinking of the ice. I brought the glass to her, holding it out.
She didn't take it at first. She just watched me, her eyes narrowed, suspicious.
"What is this, Kai?" she asked. "Some kind of power play? You show me a pretty light show, and now I'm supposed to tell you all my secrets?"
"This is not a power play," I said, my voice hard. "This is about balancing the scales. An Alpha cannot allow a debt of honor to go unpaid. It's a cancer that weakens the entire pack structure."
I pushed the glass a little closer to her. "Take the water, Valerie."
She finally took it, her fingers brushing against mine for a fraction of a second. She didn't drink.
I walked back to the railing and leaned against it, turning to face her. I crossed my arms.
I held her gaze, my own eyes hard as flint.
"Tell me what they did to you," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous command. "Don't leave out a single detail. I need to know the full extent of the debt they owe you."
She was silent for a long time, just staring out at the dark valley below. The cool mountain wind stirred a few loose strands of her dark hair.
Finally, she took a small sip of water. She set the glass down on the railing with a soft click.
She turned her head and looked me right in the eye. Her expression was cold, distant, and utterly devoid of emotion.
"It started when I was eight," she said.
