Chapter 102
Chapter 102
Nerissa and Faye just happened to turn around at that moment.
The two of them ended up missing each other completely.
Joel could only watch their backs.
He ran a hand through his hair.
“That’s weird, he thought.
Joel could’ve sworn he’d just seen something.
But now, everything looked perfectly normal.

Ivy happened to be standing in that direction. When she saw Joel looking her way, her heart started pounding. She grabbed Vivian’s hand and said excitedly, “Vivian, look! Is Mr. Joel Berenson looking at me?”
Vivian immediately looked up.
Sure enough, Joel was looking over in their direction.
Vivian nodded, just as excited as Ivy. “Yes, yes, Ivy! He is totally looking at you! Oh my god, that’s Joel Berenson! Ivy, do you know him?”
“No, I don’t,” Ivy shook her head, blushing. “But my cousin is his wife’s personal assistant, and I’m way prettier than those girls from Minttown. Of course he would notice me!”
Joel came from a super influential family.

Even though he was getting older, he still had loads of charm. If Ivy could get his attention, it would be a huge honor for her family.
Sure, Jessica was kind of pretty.
But she was getting older.
Her glory days were long gone.
Jessica was no match for her.
Ivy was just eighteen, young, vibrant, and gorgeous. If Nerissa could land herself a rich husband, then why couldn’t she? She was sure she had what it took.
Once Joel set his sights on her, he’d kick Jessica to the curb. She would marry him, living the high life.
She’d have her own personal assistant catering to her every whim.
She’d be the boss lady of Starlight Entertainment.
Even Hailey would have to tiptoe around her and watch her mood just to get by.
In the worst scenerio,
even if she only got to be Joel’s lover, that’d still be a win in her book.
After all, Joel was loaded.

Ivy had heard all the gossip from Hailey. Joel spoiled Jessica rotten. Just one birthday gift for Jessica was worth tens of
millions.
Once she became Joel’s new darling, he’d definitely shower her with gifts and money.
The more Ivy thought about it, the more thrilled and smug she felt. She could already picture herself as Joel’s pampered mistress, living the dream.
Ivy was sure Joel had a thing for her.
Otherwise, why would he have his eyes glued to her like that?
Those eyes of his, though.
Dangerous, yet utterly irresistible.
Even pushing sixty, he was still so charming. Her heart skipped a beat.
Besides, Ivy had heard from Hailey that Joel had a spotless reputation when it came to his private life. Unlike those other big shots in the industry, he never fooled around with other women. If she could catch his eye, she’d be his one and only mistress.
And the last one, too!
When Joel suddenly stopped walking, Jessica glanced over, a little puzzled. “Joel, what are you staring at?” she asked.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Joel replied, ruffling his hair. “Just got this weird feeling, that’s all.”
“What’s it?” Jessica asked.
“I could’ve sworn someone was watching me just now,” Joel replied.
Jessica couldn’t help but laugh. “You always have people watching you. What’s so weird about that?”
Her husband was an entertainment mogul.
Whenever he went out, people were always trying to catch a glimpse of him, and the paparazzi were always lurking, ready to get a shot.

Joel nodded. “You’ve got a point, but I swear, the way that person was looking at me… it just hit different from everyone else.”
“Different how?” Jessica asked.
‘Can someone’s look really be so different?’ she wondered.
Joel looked genuinely confused. “Honestly, I can’t explain it. There was just something off. It’s one of those things that’s impossible to put into words.”
With that, Joel looked away. “But maybe I was just imagining things. Let’s go.”
Jessica nodded and fell into step beside him.
Joel paused after a few steps, as if something had just popped into his mind.
“Hey, New Year’s coming up. Any ideas what we should get Arie this year?” he asked.
Even though they still hadn’t managed to bring Arie back home,
Joel and his brothers would prepare gifts for her and kept them in the bank safe.

Jessica nodded. “I’ve been thinking about that, too. Last year, when Arie turned eighteen, we put a crown in the safe for her. How about we get her a pair of bracelets this time?”
“Sounds good,” Joel said, nodding. Then he let out a sigh. “We’ve been waiting for so many years. Who knows when we’ll finally find Arie?”
Jessica frowned. “Stop sighing! It’s bad luck for Arie!”
Just like the other Berenson family sisters-in-law, Jessica treated Arie just like her own kid.
More than anyone, she wished they could find Arie soon.
“Alright, alright, no more sighing,” Joel grinned. “Look, I’m smiling now. Does that work for you?”
At that moment,
the phone suddenly rang.
Jessica picked up the phone.
“Hello?” she said.
Whatever was said on the other end of the phone made Jessica’s face go pale. She blurted out, “What? Okay, we’re already at the airport. We’ll be back right away!”
As soon as Jessica hung up, Joel turned to her, concern etched on his face. “What’s going on?”
Jessica’s face was grim. “It’s Mom. Something’s wrong.”
“Mom? What happened to her?” Joel blurted out, worry flooding his voice.
Jessica quickly explained, “Don’t freak out. The butler just called Mom fell on her way to pray for Arie and Charkotte. She’s in the hospital now, in emergency care.”
As the end of the year, Mrs. Berenson would personally make her way to the temple every single year to pray for her daughter and granddaughter.
Joel’s anxiety spiked. He shot a look at his assistant, who was walking ahead. “Max, get us to the hospital, now!”
He didn’t even bother to say which hospital. Everyone knew the Berenson family owned the top hospital in town.
Of course, Mrs. Berenson had been rushed straight to the family’s own hospital for emergency care.
“Got it, Mr. Berenson! I’ll get everything set up right away!” Max replied, already moving to make arrangements.

Meanwhile,
Nerissa and Faye got in the cab to their hotel.
Since Faye had already booked their round-trip first-class tickets Nerissa handled the hotel booking.
She reserved a luxury king room.
The hotel was in a prime spot. Sanding by the floor-to-ceiling windows, one could enjoy the best ocean view in Minttown,
Technically, it wasn’t an ocean view.

It was more of a harbor scene,
But the scenery was absolutely unbeatable. Tons of iconic shots from classic Minttown movies were filmed right here.

Hunter.
“Grandpa, check this out! This is the harbor in Minttown,. The view’s really something. Next time, I’ll take you on a trip and we’ll stay at this hotel together,” Nerissa said, turning her phone to show Hunter the scenery.
Hunter laughed. “I’m too old for all that running around, cars, planes, too much for me. You go enjoy yourself, Nerissa. Don’t worry about me. It’s my day off anyway. Look, I’m playing cards with my friends!”
As he spoke, Hunter turned the

Hunter was way more into chilling at home with a deck of cards than traveling around.
He’d always loved playing cards. But when money was tight, he’d rather stash away every bit of cash for Nerissa. But now, it was a whole new ball game.
His granddaughter was killing it these days.
Now that he had a day to himself, he could kick back and do what he loved.
Nothing wrong with a little card game to spice things up.
“Hey, Nerissa!” Hunter’s three friends immediately waved at her
“Hey!” Nerissa greeted them one by one.
Just as Hunter was about to say something else, someone called out from nearby, “Hunter, someone’s here for you.”
“Coming,” Hunter said, swinging the camera around. “Nerissa, have fun, okay? I gotta go take care of something.”
“Okay, Grandpa,” Nerissa replied.
She ended the video call.
Faye ended her video call at the same time. “Nerissa, the view here is amazing! Let’s go downstairs, take some cute pics, and maybe grab a bite if we spot something tasty nearby.”
“Sounds good,” Nerissa replied with a slight nod.

Meanwhile,
in the hospital,
Mrs. Berenson had an accident. By the time Joel and Jessica arrived, Victor and his wife Verena as well as Lawrence and his wife Eliana, were already there.
Joel immediately asked, “How’s Mom doing?”
Jessica looked just as anxious, waiting for their reply.
Victor shook his head. “She was already in the ER when we got here. Dr. Campbell said she’s getting older, and she hit her head pretty badly when she fell. There’s some bleeding in her brain. It’s not looking good.”

Verena chimed in. “But seriously, don’t stress too much. Mom’s ways had luck on her side. She’ll make it through.”
Jessica pressed her hands together, praying hard. “God, please keep Mom safe. She still hasn’t seen Charlotte and Arie come home yet!”
Joel asked, “Did you let the others know?”
Lawrence replied, “Yeah, I already called others. They’re all on their way to the hospital.”
Luckily, it was almost the New Year, so Jasper and Sean had already caught their flights last night, heading home for the holidays.
Now, only Harvey, Boaz, and Frederick were scrambling to get back on short notice.
Creak!
Just then,
the doors to the ER swung open.
Dr. Campbell stepped out.
The three brothers and their wives rushed over, anxiety written all over their faces. “Dr. Campbell, how’s she?” they asked in
unison.
Dr. Campbell took off his mask, and sighed. “The surgery went smoothly, but Mrs. Berenson’s brain injury is extremely complicated. We can’t remove the blood clot for now, so she has to rely on a ventilator to breathe. Unless a miracle happens, I’m afraid she might not make it past this year…”
