"That was your decision. You must have had your own reasons for doing things your way.
"But coming to pick you up was my choice. It was how I wanted to treat you. These two things don’t need to be mixed together."
Aurora widened her eyes slightly. She never expected someone to put it that way. It really did feel like what a normal relationship was supposed to be.
Maybe she had just encountered too many scumbags before, especially Joseph.
The moment she thought of him, she felt nauseated.
"How is it? Did your mom believe what you told her?"
Lucas figured he should check on her.
Hearing that, Aurora felt something complicated rise in her chest.
"I really can’t say for sure. And…I think I’ve learned some things about Mom’s past."
"What do you mean?"
Lucas didn’t start the car. He turned to her instead. "You’re saying you found out about something from before?"
Aurora nodded. She had no intention of hiding it from him.
"It turns out Tessa wasn’t Mom’s biological daughter. She and I aren’t related by blood."
Saying it out loud left Aurora with an unexpected sense of loss.
All these years, she had always felt that she and Tessa were never close.
She even wondered in private whether something was wrong with her.
After all, other sisters seemed to get along so well.
They cared about each other, looked out for each other, and people even recognized them as siblings when they went out together.
But she and Tessa were nothing like that.
Every time the two of them went out together, people always asked if one of them was the neighbor’s kid.
Lucas finally understood what Aurora meant.
He never imagined his mother-in-law was capable of something like this.
"So how did the conversation with her go?"
"I laid out all the evidence right in front of her, but she still insists that man would never hurt her."
Lucas raised a brow, finding the situation more and more absurd.
"That man… don’t tell me he was your mom’s…"
He didn’t finish the sentence. Saying it as a junior felt inappropriate, even if that was exactly what he meant.
Aurora nodded seriously.
"Just like you think. That man was my mom’s first love."
