Arnold looked at Grace, unsure what else he could possibly say.
A part of him even wondered if he had gone too far. After all, he was only a housekeeper.
Grace, on the other hand, was the head of the household.
She had the authority here, and these were matters he shouldn’t have been the one to bring up.
A flicker of fear crept into his chest.
Had he crossed a line?
“Madam Grace, you really don’t need to say all this to me.”
He spoke earnestly. “I only felt Miss Aurora had suffered too much, so I wanted to speak up for her. But you’re right, no matter what, you’re her mother. I shouldn’t interfere too much in the things between you two.”
“That’s not true.”
Grace immediately refuted him. “What you said made perfect sense. You told me out of good intention. I shouldn’t take it to heart.”
She let out a tired sigh. “Tell me, who else do I have around me now? If even you refuse to speak honestly to me, who am I supposed to rely on?”
Hearing that, Arnold couldn’t help agreeing.
For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.
If Grace wouldn’t even listen to him, she truly had no one left at her side.
Both daughters had drifted away from her, choosing their own paths far from home.
Thinking of that, Arnold found himself feeling a pang of sympathy for her.
But then again, Aurora was still just a child.
All the unfair treatment she had endured growing up came from Grace. Grace bore undeniable responsibility for that.
No matter how he looked at it, she couldn’t escape blame.
Arnold exhaled softly.
“Go on, Arnold. Get back to your work.”
Grace looked as if all the strength had been drained from her.
For the first time, she genuinely understood just how far she had gone off course.
She had backed the wrong person completely, pouring all her devotion into a girl who never cared for her in return.
And that so-called daughter was nothing more than the child of her late lover and the woman he truly loved.
She had no blood ties with her at all, yet she cherished her as if she were part of her own flesh.
Anyone who heard this would call her a fool, but back then, she had thrown herself into that role willingly.
The thought nearly made Grace laugh at herself.
From that day on, Arnold noticed that Grace truly had changed.
She no longer rushed into things blindly. Whenever something happened, she would take the time to talk it through instead of barreling forward on her own.
