Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 1

Emma Hayes was dying.

Acute leukemia.

The hospital’s diagnosis had just come back that afternoon. When she first saw the results, she wasn't surprised. In fact, it was something she had suspected.

Her health had been failing for a year, the warning signs were all there. But what was she doing back then?

She was busy checking Evan Cooper's phone, busy hunting down his mistresses, busy fighting with him.

Eventually, they grew to despise the sight of each other. The man she had loved for eleven years finally couldn't stand to see her anymore and stopped coming home.

The house was empty, devoid of any life. Outside, the sky was overcast, a light rain falling. With no lights on inside, the rooms were swallowed by a deep gloom.

Emma’s hand, clutching the diagnosis, trembled. After a long hesitation, she dialed the number of the person she hadn't contacted in so long.

"Hello."

The familiar, cold voice came from the other end of the phone.

At least he was still willing to answer her calls.

A lump formed in Emma’s throat. "Hello…"

Her voice was hoarse.

The tips of her fingers, gripping the report, turned white.

"What is it?"

After a long silence, with no indication that she was going to speak, Evan asked coldly.

"Are you… coming home tonight?"

What kind of boss was so busy they didn't even have time to come home for dinner?

The company wasn't in its growth phase anymore; it was stable. So, what exactly was Evan so busy with?

Emma sobbed, her face a mess. She wasn't a fool. She knew Evan had someone else, and his heart was with that person now.

Two years ago, Evan's heart had begun to stray. Under the guise of business dinners, he started keeping a mistress, just like all the other big shots. He felt guilty at first, always trying to make it up to her after each indiscretion.

She had been naive back then and hadn't noticed a thing. Not until she went to his office to drop off some documents, pushing the door open without announcing herself. There, she saw a beautiful young woman nestled in Evan's lap as they were locked in a passionate kiss.

Recalling that moment, Emma only remembered the blood rushing to her head, her temples throbbing as if they would explode. She never, ever imagined Evan would cheat on her, let alone that she would find out like this.

She remembered letting out a cry, and before Evan could even move toward her, to comfort her…

Emma raised her hand and swung, slapping him hard across the face.
