She broke down crying, screaming hysterically, wanting to destroy the entire office. She rushed at the other woman and slapped her just as hard.
One slap wasn't enough. She lunged again, but a hand gripped her wrist from behind.
"That's enough!"
Evan's face was dark with fury that day.
He asked her, "Are you done making a scene, Emma?!"
He was asking if *she* was done?
He was protecting another woman?
When Emma heard that, she just wanted to scream, to scream until her lungs gave out. She couldn't believe the man she'd loved for eleven years was now yelling at her in public, all for another woman.
They had been so in love once. How did they end up like this, a pair of bitter enemies?
They had overcome such hardship, weathered such difficult times together.
Emma couldn't understand it. If she could, maybe she would have divorced him long ago…
The doorbell rang.
She opened the door to find Jason.
"Ma'am, Mr. Cooper asked me to bring you this soup. You should have it while it's hot."
"Okay, thank you."
Emma forced a smile. Her face was pale, and her eyes were still a little red.
Jason didn't know what had happened, but seeing Emma like this, he couldn't help but add quietly, "Ma'am, Mr. Cooper has a big project right now. He's genuinely busy. He'll come see you as soon as it's over."
"Alright."
This was the path she had chosen. No matter how bitter it was, she had to suffer in silence.
Three months ago, Emma hadn't thought her life was particularly hard. Her days were consumed by provoking Evan, by her relentless mission to defeat all the intruders threatening her marriage. She had even found a perverse pleasure in it.
She was like a cornered lioness, fiercely guarding her territory, her eyes fixed on any outsiders.
She hated Evan's infidelity, was disgusted and enraged by it, but she was unwilling to just let him go.
They had eleven years of history between them. She couldn't be like the protagonists in novels and movies, who could walk away from everything with a casual, carefree turn.
He was, after all, the man she had loved for eleven years. So, she had thought, she would stay entangled with Evan until death. Even in death, she wouldn't let him go, wouldn't leave him.
But now, Emma regretted that.
She was really dying. So, she didn't want to waste away like this with him anymore…
