After leaving that night, Evan didn’t come back for a long time.
Mrs. Alvarez came to the house every morning to help with cooking and cleaning. Seeing that Emma was pregnant and often alone, she grew worried and one day approached her directly.
“Ma’am, now that you’re pregnant and your husband is often away on business, I was thinking...”
Mrs. Alvarez wrung her hands, a little embarrassed. She was afraid Emma would misunderstand her intentions, but she was genuinely concerned about her being by herself.
“What is it, Mrs. Alvarez?”
Emma put down her book and looked at her, waiting for her to continue.
After a moment of hesitation, Mrs. Alvarez finally said it. “I was thinking, if you need it, I could live here. That way, if you ever need someone to look after you, I’ll be here to help right away. What do you think?”
“Yes... of course, Mrs. Alvarez. Thank you.”
Emma was deeply grateful for the offer. She stood up and took Mrs. Alvarez's hands, momentarily at a loss for words. “Mrs. Alvarez, please don’t worry about the salary. I will personally cover all your living expenses from now on—”
“Ma’am!”
Before Emma could finish, Mrs. Alvarez squeezed her hand, interrupting. “What are you saying? My children are grown now and can support themselves. I don’t need to help them. I work here to earn a little spending money, just enough for myself. The money isn’t important. I just... I worry about you being here all alone. That’s why I want to stay. I have no other motive...”
Emma knew, of course, that Mrs. Alvarez wasn't offering to stay for the money. But she didn't know how else to express her gratitude to the woman who had helped their family for so many years, so her only thought was to compensate her more financially.
Although she and Evan had already signed the divorce application, they hadn't seriously discussed the division of assets.
Emma had long since torn up the original divorce agreement her lawyer had prepared. She felt she had been far too kind back then.
To divorce a tycoon like Evan and only ask for $500,000 in cash, a small car, and a two-bedroom apartment.
Thinking back on it now, she felt that the person she was three months ago had been a bit of a fool.
She hadn't cheated, she hadn't made any mistakes—she was essentially the party without fault. Why should she settle for so little?
