A sense of worry crept into her heart. She didn’t know what had happened last night, but it was her employers' business, and a housekeeper had no right to ask.
Mrs. Alvarez cleared the dishes from the table, took them to the kitchen, and started making breakfast.
After breakfast was ready, she waited for another two or three hours, but there was still no sound from the second floor.
Mrs. Alvarez walked to the bottom of the staircase, looking up at the master bedroom. When she arrived, she had noticed a pair of men's dress shoes by the entrance, which meant Mr. Cooper had come home last night and hadn’t left yet. Mrs. Cooper should be home as well.
She waited a while longer. As noon approached, there was finally some movement upstairs.
Emma emerged from the room, fully dressed and looking composed. Behind her was Evan, equally impeccable in a suit.
“Ma’am…”
Mrs. Alvarez stood by the stairs and greeted the couple.
Emma walked down, offering her a polite smile. “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting, Mrs. Alvarez. I overslept this morning.”
“No, not at all… Young people are under a lot of stress. It’s normal to need more sleep.”
Seeing that Emma seemed fine, Mrs. Alvarez smiled warmly. “I’ve made breakfast and lunch. Let me know which you’d prefer, and I’ll set the table.”
Emma glanced back at Evan. “I don’t have much of an appetite. I’d just like some soup. What about you?”
“The same as you is fine.”
At that, Mrs. Alvarez nodded and went to the kitchen, returning with the seafood chowder she had prepared that morning.
At the table, the couple ate their soup in silence, making occasional small talk. They seemed nothing like a couple who had just had a massive fight the night before.
“What are your plans for this afternoon?”
Emma shook her head slightly. “No plans.”
Evan had completely lost all trust in her. Taking her to the office, under the guise of choosing a dress for the evening, was really just his way of making sure she didn’t go out to “meet” someone else.
After all these years together, she knew what was on his mind better than he did himself.
For the first time in a year, Emma was back at his company.
As soon as they entered, many employees who saw her with Evan immediately greeted them.
They were formal and very reserved.
Emma gave a slight nod and followed Evan into the elevator, carrying her purse.
Her reputation in this company wasn’t great. Any employee who had been there for more than two years had likely witnessed the infamous scene where she had stormed the office to confront his mistress.
She was surely the subject of office gossip, but the old Emma hadn’t cared, and the current Emma cared even less.
