Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 81

Jason graciously brought a cup of coffee into Evan's office for her.

Evan had a last-minute meeting to attend, so he didn't stay long before heading upstairs.

Ms. Miller was still out on an errand and wouldn't be back for a while. Emma sat on the sofa in Evan's office and casually picked up a magazine from under the coffee table. It was filled with celebrity gossip, and one issue even had a photo of her and Evan leaving the police station.

The sound of a knock came from the door. It was the front desk staff delivering some washed fruit.

Two young women entered cautiously, placed the fruit in front of Emma, and said, "Mrs. Cooper, please enjoy." They didn't dare to linger a moment longer and quickly left the office.

Emma noticed their fear but didn't pay it any mind. She got up, opened the door, and walked out to use the restroom.

As she was finishing up, she heard two women talking by the sinks outside.

"Oh my god, I was so scared just now, just bringing that monster some fruit! Thank goodness Rachel was with me!"

"Please, why are you so afraid of her? It's not like she's going to eat you."

"No, she won't eat me, but any woman in this company who's even remotely good-looking could become her target. You got here late, so you don't know. A couple of years ago, Mr. Cooper had an assistant named Miss Lane. Because she was beautiful and capable, she became the target of her jealousy. Right in the middle of a company-wide meeting, she just stormed in and beat the crap out of Miss Lane for no reason! The scene... you can't even imagine!"

"What? She's that intense? But when I saw her and Mr. Cooper responding to the media at the police station recently, she seemed so poised and dignified. How could she be like you say..."

"Hah, it's an act! All for show for the public, what do you think?"

"Wow... hearing you say that makes me a little scared of her..."

She tilted her head up slightly, tracing her lip line with perfect, sharp strokes. The entire time, her gaze met only her own reflection in the mirror, completely ignoring the two figures beside her who looked like they wished the ground would swallow them whole.

After applying her lipstick, she pressed her lips together lightly. Only then, through the mirror's reflection, did she nonchalantly glance at the two women standing behind her with their heads bowed.

Emma's eyes were calm. There was no anger, no contempt, not even a hint of annoyance at being disturbed. Her gaze fell upon the two receptionists as if she were scanning two insignificant pieces of furniture.

Then, she snapped the lipstick back into her purse, turned, and walked out of the restroom without saying another word.

As soon as she was gone, the short-haired girl who had been the most talkative went completely limp, slumping against the sink and gasping for air, her face deathly pale. "Oh no, oh no, she heard. She... she definitely heard. Am I going to be fired...?"

Her voice, on the verge of tears, was just loud enough to reach Emma's ears as she walked away down the hall.
