“Let’s wait and see what happens. Right now, all we have is circumstantial at best. I want to actually catch them in the act.” I said as I sipped my whiskey.
“How will we do that?” Reed asked. He had downed his second drink and was already on a third.
“The big finale still has yet to happen. I can feel it, something big is still going to happen.” I said in an ominous voice.
“How long have you known?” Wyatt said with a hint of annoyance.
“First off, the feelings I got did not go away when we got Devin and them all. Second, it’s not like I have been waiting a week to tell you. A lot has been going on. Third, you never asked either. However, I can just feel like something is going to happen and this person is going to make their move. If it was Zach, I don’t see what he would get out of it. Even if he kills me, he is not the right bloodline to take over. Maybe he wants to kill Wyatt and myself so he would have been Alpha, and get the money?” I said be thinking of possibilities.
“Interesting thought…” Reed said, thinking
“Maybe he was hoping Devin was going to fulfill his mission and kill you so he wouldn’t have to and now he has to do it himself?” Wyatt threw out there.
“I just don’t see it though. What would have made him change his mind? We grew up together. I know Brooke has felt threatened by our friendship, but I assumed that went away when I mated with you.” I said, looking at Wyatt. I finished my drink and got up to refill it. However, Wyatt had beat me to it and took my drink to refill it.
“Money changes and person and the mate bond is strong. I’m sorry, but if Brooke had ambition with some persistence, she could have persuaded him to do those things.”
Wyatt handed me my drink and sat back down. He was not happy. “I just don’t see that. She has never been one to show any kind of authority. Even if I had died, Kelly would have been next in line.”
“Maybe she thinks, since Kelly is mated to me, that she would take over now and has had Zach do it for her?” Reed asked looking apologetic
“I just don’t feel like this is the right path. I honestly don’t think it is them, but they KNEW things about that week I left that they shouldn’t unless someone talked I grew up with.”
“Would your ex-boyfriend talk to them?” Reed asked.
I shrugged, “I mean, it is possible. If he thought it would bring me back, but honestly, he would know I am fully mated and that is not a possibility. He could be behind it and working through someone.”
“Which brings us back to Zach. Full circle. Maybe he asked to go with you to keep an eye on you to report back?”
I didn’t have an answer for that. Would Zach really betray me like that? I want to say no but the timing and coincidences of it all is too much not to notice. “Regardless of who it is. I have a very strong feeling it is going to happen at the ceremony tomorrow. I don’t know what, but something or someone is going to make their move.”
“We will need to make sure security is extremely high. It is good that you will be right beside her through it all, but that branding will be rough. That is when you will be at your most vulnerable. I will post a few guards on either side of the isles and the stage. Maybe pull back the seating from the stage?”
“Yeah, that sounds good. We will need to have a few tricks up our sleeves too. No one gets too close to her until it is over.” Wyatt said, very determined. “Starting now!”
“Now?” I asked
“What if they poison your food or something?” Wyatt shot back.
“You realize I am immune to poison…” I said to him.
“Still. I can’t take any chances,” Wyatt said stubbornly. I understood him though, so I didn’t put up much of a fight about this.
“If us three don’t hand it to you, don’t eat it or drink it.” Reed said. I knew when he said ‘three’ he was including Kelly.
“Got it. I will monitor emotions and what not. I think I am getting the hang of it.”
“You did great with Kelly!” Reed said, looking half happy, half sad. Probably because he can’t do it.
“Let me know if she gets to be too much and I will chill her out, but it is a lot easier in small crowds on which door I open or close.”
“Guys, dad just linked me, it is time for the party.” Reed said, standing up. “I am taking this.”
“Me too” I said, and Wyatt nodded in agreement. It’s not like we have to watch out for a hangover.
Walking down to the backyard, I started hearing music and a lot of voices. Wyatt opened the door and we stepped out into dusk. There are strings of light bulbs luminating the area just enough to make it cozy, but enough we could all see easily. The sun was still up so they were needed exactly right now but, they will be here soon. The smell of BBQ and the smoke was wafting over everyone, and a pack member was DJ in the corner. Round tables were set up and there was even a little dance floor. Not sure people will be using that.
I found Theresa, Ed and Harry speaking with both sets of parents and Kelly, Brook and Zach were sitting at a table with a few other pack members smiling and laughing. Grant was even here mingling with different pack members.
Autumn saw us and waved us over. Kelly was smiling and seemed to be in a better mood. Autumn did have her arm around her shoulders.
“I was just apologizing for my outburst earlier.” Kelly informed us politely
“She doesn’t think they will do anything, and it’s just talk. She said Samantha is just a jealous ex of Wyatt’s and wants him for herself.”
“And what do you think? You thought now was an appropriate time to bring this up?”
Zach’s eyes flashed and I knew his wolf was coming out. He quickly reined him in, but Raven was about done, and so was I. I turned to leave but Zach grabbed my arm. My electricity was still on, so he yelped and jumped back.
Brooke came over quickly shooting daggers at me. “Something to say, Brooke?” I said as I felt Wyatt walk up behind me. I took the electricity away so Wyatt wouldn’t get hurt.
Brooke opened her mouth to say something, but Wyatt stepped in quicker, “I suggest you don’t say a fucking word.” His tone of voice was dangerous. She quickly shut her mouth and they walked away quickly.
I looked around. The party had stopped. “Nothing to see here! Let’s keep going!” I shouted and nodded to the DJ to turn the music back on.
Wyatt took the tray and we walked back to our group. “Here are your drinks!” I said and handed them each one. “That is Sex on the Beach. Let me know what you think!” I said, smiling.
“Do I even want to ask what that was about?” Ed said as he sipped his whiskey.
“That was my sister who has some personal issues she needs to work on.” Wyatt said and glanced over at his dad and very slightly nodded. If you weren’t looking at him, you would never have seen it.
“Ah, family drama. I love it!” Theresa said, laughing
“You guys will make a great royal couple. Standing strong and the way Wyatt let you handle things but was behind you the whole time. Perfect. Good role models and I think we will see a lot of good change!” Harry said, nodding to us in approval.
“So, will you guys still be working with us directly?” I asked, trying to get some clarification on things and get the conversation away from Zach and Brooke.
“Yes, we will still handle things overseas, but we will be in constant contact with you guys. It will probably be very rare to not communicate at least once a day over some form of another. If that is email or phone, I am not sure.” Ed said. A pack member brought over plates to us and sat them down in front of us.
They all dug in but Wyatt and Reed were looking at mine like it had three heads. I brought it up to my nose and smelled it closely. Out of nowhere, Wyatt’s arm came over and knocked my plate to the ground!
“OH crap! I am so sorry! I was just reaching for the BBQ sauce. Let me go make you another plate.” He said and went to do just that.
I sighed and leaned back. I did smell something but I didn’t know what it was, so I wasn’t too upset to get a new plate. I really didn’t think so much about it. A few minutes later, Wyatt appeared with a new plate, and we all made small talk, laughing the night away.
