Reese stumbled back to her apartment, looking completely lost.
She’d barely sunk into the couch when Kay pressed a mug of warm tea into her hands.
“Reese, how much longer are you going to put up with this?” Kay said sharply. “Mr. Rupert’s throwing away even his relationship with his father for that woman. If this keeps up, what’s going to happen?”
Reese’s hands trembled so hard the tea sloshed against the rim.
She kept her gaze down. “Once Sylvia leaves the country, things will get better. They have to.”
Kay let out a frustrated sigh. “You really think Sylvia moving abroad solves anything? Did you forget the Garcias have businesses all over the world? Business trips are constant—she could be gone for weeks at a time. Who knows what could happen when you’re not watching?”
“Enough!” Reese said, her voice tight. “Aunt Kay, please, just stop.”
She set the mug down with a clatter, her face pale.
Kay frowned, irritation flickering in her eyes, but she softened her tone just a bit.
“Reese, I know you don’t want to hear this, but you can’t just trust everyone blindly. Look at your brother—he’s so taken with Sylvia he can’t see straight. You think he doesn’t know about Rupert and Sylvia? Even if you don’t care about yourself, you need to think about Lester’s future.”
The mention of her brother made Reese falter.
She twisted her fingers together, hesitant. “I—I don’t know what to do. But Lester really cares about Sylvia. I’ve never seen him like this before.”
Kay’s interest was piqued; she reached over and patted Reese’s hand reassuringly.
“I know, sweetheart. And I don’t want Lester getting hurt either. If he likes her, then fine—let’s make sure Sylvia can’t leave him. One day, maybe he’ll get bored and break up with her, it’s not the end of the world. But for now, our priority is keeping Sylvia away from Rupert.”
Reese bit her lip, uncertainty warring in her eyes before she finally nodded.
“Okay.”
“But!” Reese looked up at Kay, her voice suddenly firmer. “Aunt Kay, promise me you’ll let Sylvia and Lester be together, that’s all I want. Don’t do anything to hurt her.”
