Encore of the Avenging Muse (Sylvia and Rupert) novel Chapter 685

He reached a hand out toward her cheek, but before his fingers could graze her skin, his arm lost all strength and fell heavily to his side.

His entire body slumped forward onto Sylvia's shoulder.

Sylvia threw her trembling arms around him. "Wake up! Don't you dare die! We haven't settled our score yet..."

With a ding, the elevator doors slid open.

Orson was just about to step in with his men. The moment he spotted the blood, he rushed forward to take Rupert's weight.

"Where is she?" Orson demanded.

"Upstairs," Sylvia answered mechanically, staring at her blood-soaked hands.

"I'll handle the rest. Get him to the hospital."

Orson gave a sharp look to the two men behind him.

They swiftly boarded the adjacent elevator and headed up.

...

At the hospital.

Sylvia stood in the hallway like a ghost. The blood on her clothes had dried, clinging tightly to her skin.

Orson handed her a wet wipe.

"Ms. Lloyd, clean yourself up."

"Thank you."

Sylvia's voice was hollow. She kept her head down, mechanically scrubbing the blood from her hands.

Orson watched her, hesitating before he spoke. "Mr. Rupert was waiting downstairs the entire time. The moment he saw the medicine box you threw out the window, he knew you were in danger. He was afraid bringing men up would alert her, so he went up alone."

Sylvia kept her head lowered, but her vision was rapidly blurring.

She had read the notice from property management just yesterday.

Workers were treating the lawns downstairs for two days, so throwing objects from the balconies was strictly prohibited under threat of severe penalties.

Sylvia had intentionally grabbed an empty box and tossed it out when she opened the window.

She assumed the workers would immediately report it to management. As long as security came knocking on her door, she'd have a chance at survival.

What she hadn't anticipated was the workers ignoring it to avoid extra trouble, simply kicking the box aside.

It was Rupert who had spotted her handwriting on the box and deduced she'd never throw trash out of a window unless she was in a life-or-death situation.
