Chapter 193: “Wife Material“-2
He puts his phone down and, without looking directly at me, speaks.
“You two are serious, aren’t you?”
My fingers stop on the keyboard.
I slowly raise my gaze to him.
“Yes.”
I don’t hesitate, I don’t waver.
“It’s serious.”
Alexander nods slowly, as if confirming something he already knew.
“When it becomes public…” he says, “it’s because the decision has already been made.”
I don’t answer, because it’s true.

“Are you really sure about coming back?” he adds then, looking directly at me. “After you were the one who ended it.”
I hold his gaze.
“Yes.”
My voice is firm.
“I’m sure.”
Silence.
He nods again, but this time his expression changes slightly. Something more serious. More… profound.
“You know something?” he says, leaning back slightly in his chair “In all the time I’ve been in this industry… there’s never enough time.”
I frown slightly.
୮
“What do you mean?”
“This,” he replies, gesturing around. “Work. Projects. Expansion. Constant decisions.”
He exhales. “There’s no room to think about marriage… about children… about family.”
I listen. Because I know he’s not just talking for the sake of talking.
“What you and I do… it demands too much.”
I nod slowly.
“Yes… I know.”

I’ve felt it, I live it. But he doesn’t stop there.
“But…” he continues, “when a man meets a woman who has what it takes to be a wife…”
My breath catches slightly.
“It’s hard to get her out of your mind.”
The air changes… I can feel it.
“Especially… when he had her,” he adds, “and then lost her.”
My chest tightens slightly. I don’t say anything; I don’t know if I should.
“You feel it,” he continues. “The blow.”
His voice is lower now, more real.
“Moral… emotional… sentimental.”
I look at him. And for the first time all night… this stops being just work.
“It’s complicated.”
Silence… A heavy silence.
“When you decide what kind of woman you want as a wife…” he says, “…and you don’t have her…” He pauses. “It hurts.”
I swallow.
“Why are you telling me all this?”
The question comes out on its own.
He looks at me directly, without hesitation.
“Because…” he begins.
And there… That’s where time seems to stop for a second.

“At the moment when I least expected to be interested in something like this…” he continues, “I met that
woman.”
My heart gives a sharp blow.
“That woman, who possesses all those qualities I’m talking about.”
The silence returns, but now it’s heavy, undeniable. I hold it with my gaze; I don’t run away, but I don’t move forward either.
“Alexander…” I begin.
But he gently raises a hand.
“Relax.”

His tone changes, it’s lighter. As if suddenly, nothing had happened.
“I’m not telling you anything you don’t know how to handle.”
I blink.
“It’s just… an observation.”
A very loaded one, too much so.
“And a reality,” he adds, “that isn’t always spoken aloud.”
I exhale slowly, feeling the tension in my chest.
“I’m with Ethan.” I say it clearly, without beating around the bush.
He nods. “I know.”
“And I’m okay with it.”
“I know that too.”
Silence again. But now… different. More controlled.
He picks up the papers again, as if returning to the starting point.
“Let’s finish this,” he says. “We don’t have much left.”
And just like that… As if nothing had happened. As if he hadn’t dropped a bombshell in the middle of the night… He goes back to work. And I… I do the same. But it’s not the same anymore, because now… Now there’s something else in the air. Something that wasn’t fully said… But that can’t be ignored either.
The hamburgers arrived, and as much as I wanted to wait and eat at home, the smell won me over, awakened my hunger, and without further ado, I ate them.
After that, everything went back to normal, work… everything.
Ethan came to pick me up, and it was as if Alexander hadn’t mentioned Ethan’s name at all. Alexander has this ability to make any atmosphere tense and uncomfortable, and at the same time, to restore it.
